I was thinking of a combination of his method with the japanese step over method. If instead of one spur, you have a cluster, the branch would not need to be 6 feet tall. Further, the fruiting branches would be much lower and easier to net to protect from the birds. This is the first year, I had issues with birds eating my figs. I am thinking of lowering one of my tree branches to a more manageable size and will report if works.
