Pruning old tree

Hi there everyone!  I spoke with my Mother and she said they haven't prune the tree yet and it has leafed out.  She (and the tree lol) is in NY - Long Island.  Is it too late to prune or should they just go for it?  The tree is about 80 year old and from what I hear it has fallen on some bad times over the years and it is now more of a shrub shape with multiple trunks coming up.

If I were to guess on the type I would say black mission and the fruit ripens in very late summer, I don't remember it to be a very prolific producer.

I was thinking of getting a new tree for her (of course I'll ask first).  About 30 years ago my uncle brought home a tree with white - green figs that were huge!  They were very good and living next door to it was a very good thing.  He has since died, and the new owners of the house did not hesitate to cut the "dead tree" down shortly after they moved in, December of the year they bought the house.  Of course Mom was crushed, new owners didn't understand what they cut down until the following year when Mom let them try her figs.

And hears a picture of mine!

Joann,

I would go for it. Howerver, I would only prune 1/3 to 1/2 now and the same/rest this Winter. If it's a Mission, it is not uncommon for them to loose productivity once the get old and a good pruning can restart them. Good luck and get some sleep! LOL
