Pruning question

I have an Osborne prolific that I'm getting ready to put into a larger pot. How should I prune it to help develop a better canopy with more branching?
Thanks,

Thanks Dave!

You are already at stage 2 of Dave's diagram so now at most all you need to do is pinch (cut the tips) of the 2 branches.
Personally I like the way it looks and wouldn't prune the branches now.
Since the tree is dormant I would just untangle and prune the roots a little when up potting.

Thanks Pino! If i leave the branches alone S you suggest, will it send out more branches on its own? I guess im concerned that the two branches will just grow longer and longer without further branching if I don't prune them.

Yes there is that risk.
When they grow to the size you want (you may want to keep them symmetric as in the diagram) or when they have 4/5 leaves you can pinch the tips.  This will promote branching and fruiting.

I've seen long 6' fig trees that looked more like palm trees. No branches at all!!
Has anyone tried cutting notches in the bark just above the fruiting buds? This
forces branches to grow in some other kinds of plants. Does this work on figs?
