Is this fig actually self-fertile, like most figs, or is it part of the calimyrna fig group requiring caprification?

I think you're misunderstanding my question:  I have been told that the Purple Smyrna fig is NOT part of the calimyrna fig group.  That is is self-fertile.  I am asking if others who grow the Purple Smyrna fig can attest to this.  I know it has "Smyrna" in it's name.  I do live in California, and probably have the fig wasp around, just not sure how "around" it is.  And, I believe? I cannot plant caprifigs in my yard, either.  So, I'll ask again, for those that grow this fig, is it self-fertile?

This is my exact suspicion.  I know DWN well, have about 65 of their trees in my yard :-)  Also, if you look on Encanto's site under Descriptions, the same information is listed.  So, hopefully those that grow this fig can confirm??

The Purple Smyrna I have came from Exotica. It fruits there, but may have wasps available, so not conclusive. Mine has not fruited yet.

The fruit shown on the DWN site does not look like the one from Exotica. It actually looks more like BT, which is definitely not what the one from Exotica is.

Bottom line, do not have definitive info, yet.

Thanks.  Mine is also from Exotica.  So, guess we'll see if mine fruits or not.  I do have about 8 other fig varieties, and some wild figs growing in the neighborhood.  So, maybe I'll get figs.  Thanks for the info!

Thanks, Doug, appreciate the warm welcome!  I am in Encanto Farms' "backyard" here in N. San Diego county, and a CRFG member.  Have several different fig varieties right now:

Panachee (excellent fig)
VdB
Peter's Honey
RdB
Brown Turkey
Flanders

Love figs, never had a fresh one until I bought this property 3 years ago, and of course fell in love with them!!  So, slowly adding a few varieties, and trying to find excellent tasting varieties that will stay small.  In dealing with my over-grown Panchee, this has become more of an issue!

Patty,  learn to prune, and then prune some more. I usually take 10 feet off my Panache every season. Come for a visit some Saturday and you can see.

pitanga, I'm a Master Gardener :-)  I wield a pair of Felcos with the best.  We "inherited" this overgrown, but gorgeous Panachee fig when we bought our house 3 years ago.  This particular fig loves our climate, and is VERY vigorous.  So yes, I'll be taking 10' off of it again this season.  But, I'd love to come down and see your place.  I'm always up for a pruning session!

I am new to this forum. Also, this would be the first fig plant that I would be planting. I recently (12/26/2014) purchased a purple smyrna from Exoctica. I was told that it is self fruitful. I was wondering if other members who purchased it in the past have had any success with it.
