PUT MY FIG AWAY FOR THE WINTER

Is it too much?

Last winter I had it of to the side of the garage and with the opening and closing of the doors, it did get a chill!

This time it is against the wall of the furnace room and it is the warmest part of the garage.

All I need to do is to remove the blanket and the box box on top to water it.

I would mount a cheap digital thermometer on the wall and compare temps. I do this and it works great. Even though my garage is insulated.

How cold does it get in the garage ? What do you mean by a chill ?

By getting a chill, I meant that some new growth died back.
Nothing ever freezes near that side.

Don't you have to water it ?
Do you have to water it in March, April or May ?

Water it ones a month and only a cup ful.

Also I will bring it in at the beginning of February to give it a head start.

If temps don't go below freezing then the extra insulation is not necessary . The previous location you had it in may have been too close to the doors . I have mine 2 feet away from the garage door ( attached garage ) but I put a piece of plywood in front to act as a wind break.

You need more fig babies to take care of. Get more busy. You are having it too easy in Zone 4.

Ok, everybody send me a cutting and my garage will be full! Lol lol!

What tv channels does it get during the long winter? Just in fun- I agree with Ottowan-z5a- you need more fig babies.

Jerry
That (more cuttings) was the idea.
What is the variety you put to sleep?

Buster - the ideal over-wintering temperature is 32-42*, but your tree will tolerate root temperatures down to about 27* with no harm. I think you have some serious overkill going on there. ;-)  Your tree WANTS to be cold during the winter rest. If you think the temperatures are REALLY going to get cold in the garage, make sure your tree is directly on the floor & just cover it with an overturned cardboard box. That will moderate the temperature of the air surrounding the tree by as much as 20* when it's really cold. Mother nature knows best, so it's a good idea not to go too far out of your way to change her plan.

I was wondering, maybe a pillow. ;)

I don't coddle, or do anything so elaborate.  Just today I set my pots in the cellar, snow and all.  Except for a little water once in awhile, that's it until next April.
