Putting figs in the ground after this winter

is so satisfying and a relief. That was the longest wait for a winter to finish up ever and getting a vicious fungus gnat attack under control mid winter made it longer!

Now there is peace being restored to the kingdom.

Battaglia Green, JH Adriatic, VdB, Hardy Chicago, and an unknown are waking up from their in ground slumber happy that winter is over. VdB had I dare say ZERO dieback in zone 7a against a SE facing wall.

Nordland went in the ground a couple days ago, RdB has 2 medium sized figs on it and along with Kathleens Black and Gene's Paradiso will go in the ground in a couple days. I may push it and put a few others in ground as well.

Lots of pomegranates are in ground now as well. I think I am going to cut back on getting scion/plants in beginning of winter... I'm gonna start putting youngans in the ground faster from now on and just give them extra winter protection if I have to. Lost about 3 of my most special figs cause of famed indoor pest the fungus gnat.

Couldn't be happier winter is done and the outdoor kingdom is back.

I feel the same!!  Let's get these plants into some REAL light! - gradually...  ;)

Seems like all those winter problems like fungus gnats, mold, root rot, etc. disappear once spring time rolls around, and we are able to get the plants outside into some fresh air and sunshine...I'm seriously thinking of not doing any winter rooting next year, and just waiting for March 1st. to set up 2 or 3 root riot trays, and just go from there...what am I going to do during the winter to keep from going stir crazy?...my wife says to take up knitting..."he, he,"...once cabin fever sets in, I might just take her up on that.   :)   :)

Vince, I am with you, early spring with Root Riot Cubes. It is amazingly fast and then right in to the one gal pot.
The war against the fungus gnats was just too much.

Amen !!

I agree, Vince.  No more bulk winter rooting for me.  I made an effort to overload myself this winter so I end up with more than needed.  We'll see where my head is next winter though.

Hoping to get a couple in the ground this weekend.  Will see what next weeks forecast looks like.

I'm with you guys!  I will never root in winter again!  Can't deal with the loss due to that gnat!

I still have some "ify" cuttings that might be alive, and I'm putting them directly in ground outside and letting nature take it's course.  Next year, I will only root dormant cuttings very close to spring so they can go outside and get the chance they deserve.
