Qing Pi - China Fig

Name:
“Qing Pi” is one fig variety sold in China.  This Mediterranean fig was brought in to Weihai, China by an English man about 100 years ago.  "Qing Pi" means green skin, so the name is describing the skin color of this fig.

Description:
The "Qing Pi" produces both breba and main crop, and it produces more breba than other variety.  The breba and main crop ripen between June~ November.  When it getting ripe, the skin turn into light yellow green color with dark red center.  This is a cold tolerant variety (-1F/-17C)

Pictures:
uuu just post some pictures here

It sounds like Desert King type, but it needs ID by comparing leaf and fruit.  Maybe uuu or xxx can share more pictures for ID.

Thanks for posting Information and pictures. To me, it looks similar to Verte/Green Ischia. The attached picture is from the varieties page at http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html

I like to see how the trees were pruned!  Green outside, with red inside, all look the same.  Here is a local Seattle Unknown (Pam). Perhaps a Desert King or Strawberry Kadota. This is a very prolific fruit, per Pam's description, it is more likely to be a Desert King...don't they look alike?

Nice photos, Grasa, but none of the leaf.  Not sure they look alike.

@ Grasa -- quite sure it is Desert King

I am rooting this variety, along with a few others from China.

I have high hope for this one. Weihai is China's fig city. It has cold spring, cool summer, warm fall, and mild winter. It pretty much sounds like Vancouver. I have an in-ground desert king that does very well. I am hoping Qing Pi can do well in Vancouver as well. In spite of their similarity, I don't think Qing Pi is desert king. Desert king's main crop needs wasp, and I don't think there is fig wasp in the majority part of China.

Willwall,

Assuming it is not Desert King, it would be interesting to see the result in next few year.  Keep us update your result.

If it is a productive & delicious fig producing breba and main crop from June to November, it will be a dream variety for mild short summer area.  Good luck!!

Hi WillWall,

Beside Weihai, do you have figs in more warm area such as the Southern part?

WillWall is living at Canada , in my idea, all city of Canada is cold .  :)

@pyxistort - Certainly. I will definitely keep you posted, and share cuttings if it's a keeper.

@
karima - I am in Vancouver, Canada. I have a few other varieties from China, but they are all in rooting stage.

@xxx - The winter in Vancouver is actually pretty mild. A few degrees below the freezing point, and that's pretty much it.

@willwall-which varieties are you have from china?

@uuu -Besides Qing Pi, I have Jin Ao Fen, Po Ji Hong, Ma Si Yi, Feng Chan Huang, and Zhong Zhi. I believe Zhong Zhi (China Purple) is what's called Wu Han here. You are welcome to PM or email me.

willwall, I have the same observation about Zhong Zhi(China Purple) and WuHan, based on pictures.  It is one of the few that might be originally from China.

@willwall  @pyxistort, it should be spelled "Zhong Zi",zhong (means china) Zi(means purple) is one of common figs in china, fruitful, more side branches. But why you call it "wu han"?I never heard of this name in china,"wu han" is a big city in Middle China. how was it happened?

here are some zhong zi pics.

uuu, Thank you for correction.  Not sure about where the name WuHan came form.  I guess the original cutting was imported from WuHan city, so it was name WuHan?

Naming fig is an interesting subject.  It is kind of like why "Qing Pi" is named "Qing Pi."  Could any green color fig be called "Qing Pi"?  Could a red fig called "Red"?

I wasn't sure where the name Wu Han originated from either. Searching on this forum seems to indicate that the first person who brought this variety to North America received it from the city of Wu Han, hence the name. Sunriver questioned the name a while ago too. He identified this as Zhong Zi (China Purple), one of the most popular varieties in China.

Boy, that was a gaping eye! Not in the south!
