Quest for Brooklyn Fig

EDIT: The title originally said Bronx but it should have said Brooklyn.  Sorry

My father's parents immigrated from Madeira, Portugal approximately 100 years ago (my grandfather a bit more and making the trip three times, my grandmother a bit less).  They had 11 children with one dying at about 6 months of age (grandmother's milk was too strong???!!!).  The 10 others are aged 75-92 with my father being the second oldest.  The youngest, one of 7 girls, apparently had a wild spirit.  While the 9 others all live within 20 miles of the original farmstead, she moved to southern California.  She married someone of Italian heritage, no less! :)  Okay, at one other aunt married an Italian and they are both nice aunts!

My uncle Vinny let my aunt escape SoCal last week and they came up for a visit with the family.  I discussed my fig enterprise and uncle Vinny was surprised.  We talked some and he was under the impression that all figs came from Italy! :)  I explained to him that figs came from many places in the world and did not originate in Italy which he had a hard time accepting.  He asked, then, which was the "Cadillac of figs".  I told him this was subject of much debate but he pressed further so I let him know that many people considered a fig that goes by the name of Black Madeira as being the best-tasting.  This raised his eyebrows and he smiled.  He's a retired engineer but, perhaps, could have done well as a diplomat as well.  We talked a bit further and he said that where he was raised in Brooklyn his family had a fig tree in the back yard but that he hadn't been there for many many years and he doubted that it still was there since there were mostly Russians in the area now.  Looking at online maps, the location is no longer DeVita Prime Meats but now a Russian pharmacy.

Unfortunately, online maps are not clear enough to determine if a fig tree remains at this location.  I can only see one very large tree.  Chances are slim that it remains.  However, if someone in this forum might be in the area and be willing to help out, I'd appreciate the chance to surprise my uncle. Ideally, I'd get some cuttings from the fig tree if it still remains and really give my aunt and uncle a big surprise.  They both love figs but don't have a fig tree in their yard!!!  Send me a PM if you'd like to try to help in this quest.

There are other fig trees in front yards in the area according to the most recent online maps so it would be interesting also to see how many survived this past winter.

Hi Harvey,
There are a bunch of us in and around The Bronx. We need an address to check it out.

PM sent :)

Awesome story....my husband's family is also from Portugal....not figgies tho...trying to start up a collection of Portugese figs just as a theme.  Good luck with the quest!

Nice commando mission! :) I work in Manhattan, but rarely get to the other boroughs. Although I think I'm visiting friends in Brooklyn sometime this summer...

Let us know how this turns out when someone makes a trip there.

Two potential explorers already. Will lost update. Thanks!

I hope you are successful in locating the Brooklyn fig, Harvey. My mom's father came to California from Funchal in about 1916. He met my grandmother soon after in Sacramento...she had just arrived from Santa Cruz, Madeira. As a kid, I remember eating Mission figs from a tree on my grandfather's farm. It was a huge tree, he had planted in the 20's. A housing development went in where the farm used to be, but I just discovered that one of my uncles started cuttings from the old Mission tree, and it survives in Chico at one of my cousins house. This winter, I will be going to get some cuttings. If the tree in Brooklyn is no longer there, there is a good chance that someone will have an offspring of it. I hope you find it.

I'm praying for the good end of this quest Harvey, It's an exciting mission to complete and please ...Pictures, pictures, pictures :)

Great story..to be!

Wonderful fig history! I hope you find the tree, Harvey.

I really like your uncle Vinny even though he misspoke with his "all figs came from Italy" comment.

Clearly, what he meant to say was that all great figs come form Italy.

:-)

Fixed it for you

That Russian Pharmacy is going to wonder what triggered 100 fignatics to invade the neighborhood!  :>)

Do you guys (and gals) really wear black when you are on a mission?  Mission fig, of course!

Depends on who's taking up the hunt ! Ninja outfits have purportedly been worn also Indiana Jones.  ;))

PM sent, I am around Brooklyn often, what neighborhood?

Okay, I think we have enough ninja volunteers.  I don't want the current owners to get agitated with a swarm. Thanks, everyone.

One ninja just reported plans to drop by tomorrow so others please stay in a holding pattern in case he needs backups. :)

Awesome story!  I hope it has a very happy ending!

Heheh. Teams have been mobilized!
What's the next target?

Harvey, Your story is very inspiring. I lived in Brooklyn, NY for a while but never thought about figs the way I do now.
We had neighbors who had figs trees in their tiny backyards. Some trees were higher than the second floor. They used to bring us a whole dish full of no name figs as most of the people I knew never cared about the name. They just called them white figs or dark figs.
Since a fig tree could live over 100 years, I'm sure that some of the trees I saw there back in the 90's were many years old and may have come with the wave of immigrants in the late 1800 early 1900's.

Waiting to see if this tree is still alive.  How cool that would be.

I think a lot of folks are holding their breaths on this one.

My uncle is very skeptical the tree still exists so I'd love to surprise him, though I think a combination of factors makes chances slim.  Even if we turn up empty I think I'll share this thread with him and he'll get a kick out of that. :)

Oh hoping to hear good news . How awesome if it's still there!!

Unfortunately, the field report by our #1 ninja is not good! :(

Spoke to pharmacy manager (a russian) she has access to backyard, she also called the owner and confirmed they re-did the backyard when they bought the property in 1992 and uprooted all vegetation except one big oak tree, so fig and everything else is gone. Sorry :-(

I think uncle Vinny needs to grow a Portuguese fig anyways, LOL :)  A Preto would be nice and should do well in Northridge, CA.

Ugh, what a shame.
I think Uncle Vinny is very lucky to have such a great nephew !
Best regards to Uncle Vinny !!
