question about UCDavis

  • tvp

Hi! This is probably another question that has been covered, but I couldn't find a good answer on it. Everyone talks about ordering from the UC Davis collection, but when I go to their site it says something along the lines of "we only send for research purposes, not for home gardens, etc" or something like that.

So! My question is whether that's true or not -- can you just be a hobbyist and order, or do you have to have a stronger reason? Does anyone have any experience with this, or especially can someone give a little more of a tutorial other than "order from UC Davis"?

Insight much appreciated!

It has been covered many times. Do a search for " ordering Davis " Leave off the ucd it is too short to get results.

I was looking at ordering from Davis last night.  I stopped when I got to the "Organization" question.  What should I put there?  I like the comments about "testing fig production in micro climate..."  Or "Gulf Coast production..."  for the research question.

Thanks Jake! Searching again yielded lots of helpful results. Do they ship out only in the spring, or do they tend to send out when you order?

Meghan- maybe someone else can chime in about the "organization" field.

Thanks guys!

Orders are shipped out in the Spring.  The trees are all pruned when they go dormant and the cuttings are collected, sorted and shipped.

For organization, I put my Name, Homeowner.

They sent me everything I requested, and I have had several running email dialogues with them (I just asked a question regarding their cherry collection).

They do not send out for hobbyist anymore, I put in my order and said for home garden, then they changed the rules and I didn't get my order, I understand with funding so I am not upset.

Has anyone else found that to be true? Is it closed to home gardeners now?

When I was on their website, I didn't see anything that said they do not send to hobbyists anymore but it does ask for Organization name and says that you are expected to send in results at the end of your research.  I guess it doesn't hurt to try.  All they can do is say no, right?  Hopefully, if someone does know for certain, they will post a comment.

I wouldn't mind actually doing some research.  Real research, not just comparing various varieties in my area because all varieties seem to grow well in the desert for me.  Anyone have any ideas on what kind of fig research is needed?   What can we do to help with that?
