Question on fig culture

Do figs like moist soil or do they prefer to dry out between watering?

I've been looking into making wicking beds for some of my plants to keep their soil moist in the hot summer and wondered if my contanerized fig trees would appreciate this type of growing environment.

Of course it always depends on how moist and dry you are talking about.  What I can say is that figs seem to love self-watering containers.  SWCs media (at least for me) stays at least somewhat moist throughout the container but is more moist as one goes from top to bottom.  I would think wicking would work well for smaller containers.  For larger containers you might want to consider SWCs (also known as SIPs).

Thank you.
For the newbies and I please tell me what a SIP or a SWC is?
I'm not up in that lingo as yet but I'm willing to learn. :)

Greetings,

There's lots of info on both SIPs and SWCs here in the forum.

SIP = sub irrigation planter
SWC = self watering container

When there's fruit you want to avoid the dry/wet cycles.  Fruit growth does best with evenly moist soil.

moist soil, but not wet soil. soil should be well draining, but should retain moisture. i grow figs in containers. i only water them when the soil is almost dry, but not bone dry.

Thanks to all. I'm gonna have to try a SIP for my rooted cuttings. I was running out of one gallon containers so this sip info is right on time.

Potatochips101,
Here are a few links to previous topics on Sub Irrigated Planters (SIPs) and their successful use with fig culture.

Good Luck.

I grow my plants in 5 gallon buckets that have 1" holes on the bottom. I also have about 1" of gravel at the bottom of the bucket for drainage. One thing I discovered is that the roots grow into the ground. This is good because I can't over water and the roots in the ground always find moisture. They seem to like this because they grow well. In the fall I have to cut the roots off the bottom of the bucket and bring them inside.
