questionaires

I admit I'm full of ideas and questions, and dont know a darn thing,. but the potential is within this forum to compile a LOT of info to have in reference form. Wouldn't simple questionnaires be advantageous in collecting basic info such as how different varieties prosper in different climates? . even simply.. figs that prosper and  figs that failed, by zone and growing conditions?  All this experience and knowledge under one umbrella of access would be great.

There is this thread in Start Here...http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Best-figs-at-your-location-4800578

Some kind of chart like on Dave's Garden might be good.

Example:
Black Mission
Grows well in...San Diego, CA...in ground
Doesn't grow well in...Pennsylvania...in ground

And so forth.

WOW that's great!  no need to reinvent the wheel.

Are you sure? I always thought a square wheel was a great idea. :)

square wheel with some sort of belt system outside or bearings.. that way you can rotate the wheel to one side after certain time without having to take all the wheels off to rotate them.. hmm.. or.. i'm sure it might actually work in places like alaska where something flat might work better than a wheel.. as long as you can hook up some sort of power source.. like dogs.

That's a great thread with awesome information. I think what would be easier is an excel spreadsheet with a list of figs and some basic info. Required zones for ripening and weather or not the wasp is needed. I'm not sure if we can upload in excel format but if we could then everyone could download and use it as a reference and add tasting notes and such. I would leave tasting notes out initially since thats very subjective.

If we had that then we could easily look and see what figs could be grown in our zones. We could assess that information in minutes versus an hour or more researching through the different threads.
Seems like an easy undertaking and surely someone must have done something like this already. If not I would be happy to get it going.

That sounds like a plus to get all that valuable info organized like that.  I have no idea how to do it.   Maybe a rough outline would get it started, unless you have a format in mind.

I'm sure I can put this together with excel. Just wanted to make sure someone hasnt already dont this. I thought I saw something like this before.

If not then I can do Fig Variety, zones it will finish in, fig wasp required (Yes or No). Anything else?

Fig varieties in alphabetical order?

That sounds great.  The fig AKA names could be a mess.  maybe listing by zones and states because they will remain the same while the fig names are debatable.

however... if you think it can be done by fig name that would probably be better

Jeff,
kelby (Ampersand) started a cold hardy fig list, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=7034227 using a Google Document...

On a whim last year, I compiled a list of cultivars available on the web including all the cultivars listed at USDA @ UC Davis, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1279721657&postcount=53 and posted the Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet can be copied into a Google document, additional Region Columns (NorthEast, SouthEast, NorthWest, SouthWest etc). can be added and additional Data entered for the listed cultivars. Newly named cultivars in circulation can also be added to the list. Good Luck

Here's the Excel spreadsheet... http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/file?id=1781367

Many here and there hate Bill Gates!  He is my hero!  Excel is a powerful program.  I have all my trees in an excel spreadsheet with other sheets linked to fertilization and pruning.  I LOVE Excel!

Alanamercieca, JD is using my laptop because his died.  I have a new desktop, but he swears so much!  I have Photoshop on there, and he can't open anything because his files are so old it doesn't recognize.  I try to work with him on it, but it's really tough.  He just swears!!

There should be a class in computer anger management, right?

I'll need anger management if he messes up my laptop which I generously let him use!  I think our big worry is this weekend.  We need to pick our fantasy football teams.  Up here in the hills, the signal isn't always reliable.  SWEAR, ooops!!

Thanks Pete, I knew someone must have done this already..

Jeff, my file focuses on hardy varieties, but you are more than welcome to alter it or add on as you like. It's not meant to be comprensive, just a good starting point.

Hi SoniSoni,

When I see such lists (there are several on ggle) , I often end up thinking that most of those strains will be out of reach or already got lost (as I can't get access to them) ... So why another list ?

I'm taking the problem from an opposite corner : See what I have at reach, see what others report on that strain, trial it at my location if I dare and if I can, and report here on the forum.
Some members do it as well, some don't ... What a shame, but ok, they don't have the time for it and in the end, the world still goes round .
A forum is made of good will, so let's rely on good will and hope for members to have good will :) to report on their experiences and their results. Those are the posts I like the most.

If you have a more precise question, state it (For instance, I want to try "Osborn prolific" in my zone, comments and trial results anyone ? ) , and people here will try to help you.
The search function works great, although IMO lots of posts are not documented by photos and that does not help ...
But in the end, your location (as all locations) will have that little special thing that will make a strain successful at your garden, and another strain being a drama .

There is a post about wishlists, try posting yours there .

jdsfrance,  I agree.     I don't know that many fig varieties by names yet so I've been searching the posts by topics related to weather and productivity in SE climates and the comments posted are very helpful.   That's why I think cultivars listed under headings (humidity, freeze tolerance etc) and topics (insects, disease etc) , would be a good way to seaarch the pros and cons of cultivars without having to know the names.   As jdsfrance mentioned, many of the known cultivars are not readily obtainable so cultivars can be added as people have info to share.
I was just messing with an Excel spreadsheet and I'm feeling rather dumb, old and impatient.   I wasn't  even able to make a crude example.  bleh!
