Quick question

Hello I Live in los Angeles, Can I do anything to my fig tree right now , I mean in this time of the year? I really want to make another tree out of it, can i take cuttings from it now? maybe fedeers? I have perlite and some rotting hormone, can I use that?

You can take cuttings, now, and root them. Easiest if you remove the green portions (that have leaves) and use last years wood. See Rooting.

Not sure what fedeers are. You should be able to start air and ground layers now, the best time is after new growth has hardened. Don't use rooting hormone, figs don't need it.

Why not air-layer a branch of it and have a small tree in about 6 weeks.
Search for 'air-layer; in this forum or google it and you will find out how to do it.

Brent, I think feeders are also called "suckers"

If a sucker can be found with roots, that is a great option. I will link a video from Walter Reeves later showing the best way to dig up a sucker and transplant.

I agree that the easiest way at this time of the year is to just air layer a plant......

However, another option at this time is to find a branch where the terminal bud has not yet opened. Take about a 6 to 8 inch cutting from the end of the branch which has the terminal bud.  Cut off any leaves where the leafy portion joins at the stem. Do not cut off those stems......cut just the leafy part off. You leave those stems on because they will provide an energy reserve for the cuttings to form new roots.  Put your cuttings into some water (a glass or pop bottle is fine) that reaches half way up the side of those cuttings. Use rainwater if you can. But, tapwater works too. Change the water every few days and mix some air in when you change it. With a pop bottle just put finger on opening and shake water vigoursly to dissove some air (oxygen) in the water. Cuttings need oxygen in order to form roots. After a few days to a week or two those stems will fall off and that's OK. When you begin to see root intials start to form on the cuttings.....plant those cuttings in a rooting mix of your choice.

Best of luck to you.........

Here is a video from Walter Reeves demonstrating how to transplant suckers.

Jason--very nice video. What I wouldn't give for a few cubic yards of that soil!

Yeah, tell me about it.  I've amended the hell out of mine - sadly, the only tree that's in that area is a Monrovia BT.  It doesn't deserve it ;)

Wow, I have Dirt Envy.

Thanks for all the replies, I will do the air layering for a month or so I will try to put pictures because I have a very very very BEAUTIFULL fig tree. Thanks jason for that video, but what was that stuff he ha to dig into to get the rootes it lookes  like moss.

That was really, really good soil.

I have another question, what kind of soil do I use for my air layering?
