QVC

I was just chatting with my mom when she told me she just bought 2 hardy fig plants from QVC for $29.  NOOOOO....I feel like a bad son because she somehow didn't realize she should call me first!  She didn't know what they were so I went online to see.  She bought 2 small Hardy Chicago starters.  I could have given her nicer ones for free!  I told her "Congratulations and don't you ever do that again...whatever QVC can sell you I can give you or better...I promise!"  In fact, they already have a nice large MBVS that I potted up and gave them.  Oh well, I think it's just the shopper bug that got her.  Anyone else ever feel like this?

Dude that's messed up. You had better get your mom one heck of a mother's day gift this year... Not willing to share your figs with your own mother, man oh man....

Just kidding :)

I know!!!  Kidding or not Nick, it's true.  For mother's day I should give her a 6 pack of HCs....she'll think she got a $87 gift from me :)

And just to warn you... all you will hear forever is how your figs are ok, but those QVC ones are much better... :)

Am I going to have to add Hardy Chicago QVC to my wish list?

Qvc unknown. Highly sought after

Hi GregMartin,
Well, if they really are HC, than that's a small miss, but if they are something else, they could be a hit !
We are still in Winter and buying a small plant gives people hope for the coming spring .

I myself had the bro buy 2 figtrees that were on sale for half the price, for a small amount of € ... So why not ? ( Well, except that he called me while in the shop, and I had said No, not for me, thanks ) .
Well, the label was something like "higuera negra" with a pic of a dark brown fig with white spots.
To my surprise, both mine and the one of the bro made one fig last year ... Green skin with yellowish pulp ... Negra did the label say ?!?
I'll see this year, if they survive the winter, what they really are . But it is not a bad experience, since at least, they do make edible fruits :) and by the look, I didn't have that strain already .

Honestly, for the price, I would congratulate her. Did you speak to her about the (big big) greenhouse expanding the growing season :) ?

Thanks guys, I feel better already.  jds, you are right...the larger greenhouse talk is a great idea!  My folks are getting older and they should use these plants as part of an excuse to switch from annual vegetable growing to figs in a greenhouse!  They have a south facing black top driveway so I put their MBVS in a 20 gallon pot on wheels that they can just roll into and out of their garage, but in-ground figs in a greenhouse would be fantastic.

When I visit I'll have to see if they got themselves some QVC unk plants....that would be a primo name!  You guys should watch their video...it's kind of funny.

The salesman in the video is a true professional! The grower picked him an unripe fig @ 1:30 and he obviously did not want to swallow the small bite he took. Stuck to the script and says "That is sweeter than I thought!" as the ficin tenderized his mouth, ha! The dark figs look fake.

Brent, that's the part I liked the most too.  I didn't get all the way to the end, but that part made it worth while!  I guess he thought it had negative sweetness before trying it.  The art of the pitchmen....ugghh.  I was wondering for a minute if I these guys were from Ty Ty.

Lol! The video is hilarious. When they start talking about a topic that's familiar to you, then you see the bs. Are those really fake figs? Ugh...

Bobby, I bought a 4' tall Kadota from a wholesale grower for $10 bucks, and it's up in my top 5 favorite figs, so your grandparents did good!  Not sure what a Monrovia is, but Kadota is a great juicy, big sweet yellow fig.  You should get some cuttings from grandma's tree!
