Rain capes for potted figs

When rain is forecast, I usually move my small potted plants underneath the eaves of the house or garage, where the large overhang acts like an umbrella and creates a kind of rain shadow.  But the pot of my Negronne tree is too big to be completely underneath the eaves, so this year I've been using a "rain cape" on it.  Whenever it's supposed to rain, I go tie a garbage bag around the trunk, making sure the top of the soil is covered over and that the bag wraps down the sides of the pot.  That way the rain doesn't get into the pot.  Granted, it may not look all that pretty, but it's worked in keeping the pot from being soaked during our downpours.  I admit that it would have looked better to use one of those clear bags.  But I accidentally bought a box of orange bags that the garbage pickup won't accept, so now I have to find creative uses for them ... such as rain capes for figs.

Great idea I too grow in pots and at times face the same problem. I was thinking once I repot I will use a 11/4 inch pvc pipe as my stake and when it rains Place one of many golf umbrellas in, if the winds permit

My oh my! They sure are getting particular about trash if they won't pick up orange bags, like it makes a difference. I don't understand, but then again I guess I don't need to. I do like the idea of the covers though. I was thinking of doing the same with my small potted plants after I lost one from what I think was too much water, but then I found the perfect temporary cover for them. I store them under my overturned canoe that on a trailer. It should be too long before we enter our fall drought and then I will put them in the ground. They should be dormant by then.

Thats a good idea, also i wanted to add that we have big recycle bins along with our regular garbage pickup, those bags would have been ok in our bin. As the encourage by us plastic, paper, metal and cardboard to be put in recycle bin.

Something must be very wrong with me!
Although this summer we had more than our share of rain
here in the NE (together with less of the more desired heat),
I usually  do welcome rain - much, much less fig watering to me....

I did the same thing this summer for my LSU gold.  Not only did it keep the rain out, the bag shaded the pot so the black pot did not over heat.  I used plant wrap (strechy flat plastic to tie up plants) to tie the bag to the pot and to the trunk.  I had to remove the lower branch, only pencil thick, to get this to work.  I used a white kitchen bag, just like you, it stood out like a sore thumb.
