Rain, split figs and horses.

This late in the season, we are still getting good figs, but after recent rains, most are split and many have lost their flavor.  On a good note, our horses don't mind, when they see me picking from the trees, they begin to nicker and paw like Mr. Ed, as if to say ( Pleeze Wilbur, just one more fig). In an earlier reply to a post, I put down the Excel fig for splitting after rains and being bland, well I have changed my mind on the late season Excels, they still split, but the flavor lately is excellent.  With cold weather approaching, I must find room in the garage and well house for all the 1 gallon babies.

How do you get the young plants ready for dormancy, do ya kind of slack off them from watering, I have some in 1 gal & 3 gal pots that I will put in the shed when they go dormant but right now their not even close except maybe one O'R

Thanks

Cecil, my plants are about half and half.  Some are still very green and some are dropping leaves.  If I could slack watering I would, but for now till cold weather, I will let nature take its course. My small fig plants are setting outside in a lightly shaded area on a ground mat in a mulched area .  I have not watered them but once since potting them in April and May, that much rain this year,.  They are mostly leafed out with a few  plants leaves yellowing and falling off.  I will leave them alone outside until the leaves fall and maybe a light frost.  I cover the windows in the concrete block well house to keep out the light, check the potting soil and fill to near the top of the pot.  I put them side by side on a concrete floor,  some on metal and wood shelves, check them about every 2 weeks to make sure they do not desiccate or get varmint damage.  I keep a mouse trap baited and checked regularly. I water very sparingly.  There is a 120v radiator heater set on minimum that comes on right at freezing and a 60 watt bulb.  They will probably go to bed late October to early Nov here in zone 7.

Thanks C.H.

I have a nice shed that does not have any windows to store them in

it has a wooden floor and it really don't get that cold here, after reading what Al has just posted on the GW/FF I might leave them on my South facing front porch this winter!

Again, Thanks much.
