--- Raintree order

I received 3 one gallon figs from the Raintree Nursery today. Very nicely packed with shredded paper and long bamboo sticks to prevent from sliding up. I got Sultane, Pastillere, and Petite Negri.
One last but not least thing: everything was delivered for $10 only :D

Very nice trees, thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

Nice sturdy stems and dark green leaves. Looks like they've gotten enough light for good growth and won't need much if any acclimation to the elements, especially at this time of year.

Thanks, Gina. We still have plenty of sun in the SoCal and the figs are ready to live in the wild.

You got lucky sir, I got my order from Raintree 4 days ago and they looked half dead. I don't know if it is the weather up there but not one leaf on 2 trees that was completely green. All had rust and were yellow. They have since fallen off so I have 2 dormant looking trees. The stock looks good so here's hoping they come back. My shipping charge was approx $28.00.

hello tami, your figs are fine. the temperatures are in the high 30s at night around here and i am close to raintree but they are even colder than me because they are very close to the mountain.  i would call with your concerns but im sure they would tell you they were going dormant. if there were a problem i would hope they would make it right. i have ordered from them and have always received great stuff from them.  good luck.

My last order from them was perfect. I did indicate it may have been from the weather and I believe it might be. I am going to wait and see if they green back up before I would even think about contacting them. I am just curious though why some of the trees sent are not going dormant, greenhouse perhaps?
At any rate the wood looks good and is nicely shaped. MUCH better than another nursery I ordered from before.
I just wish they could all show up looking like the ones from Jon.

Tami, I'm sure they get trees from various wholesale suppliers. The ones that Igor got were probably recieved more recently. I'm sure they will tell you to wait untill next spring to be sure your trees are not just going dormant. If  they don't come back and are indeed dead, they will credit your account towards the purchase of any new plants or send you replacements(your choice). The only catch is you will have to pay the shipping again.  To somewhat counter this, I just order more stuff than the single replacement plant, then the shipping is sort of nullified. I just call and ask what the cash value break down is per tier of shipping charges and stay within the first level. I have dealt with them on many occasions and always get good service.

Nice trees Igor. I don't remember them offering Sultane or Pastillere. Since you have discovered the wasp in your area you are lucky and get to enjoy that Pastillere. I really like the PN I got from them, although I don't think it is an actual PN it is still a really good fig. I always refer to it as Petite Negra-RT to keep it clear of confusion. I'm curious, how do the leaves look on the trees as far as sign of FMV?

Tami, I believe Eithieus hit on the head. If I recall correctly, my fall arriving trees from them a few years back looked bad
but in the end, it was because of their weather and going dormant. I think they will be fine and if not, they sound like
reputable people on the phone and they will probably make good on it. If it would make you feel better give them a call.

Calvin, that's a good plan, I'll do that if they don't bounce back. After dealing with the rest of my figs though, I think they'll be fine.
A thread awhile back talked about "Petite Negri or is it"? You should take a look at it. Herman was identifying and clearing confusion on those as opposed to Aubique Petite. I believe the ones from Raintree are indeed Petite Negri. At least from the leaf pictured he identified.
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/doesnt-look-like-petit-negri-but-is-it-5930769

I had to study the entire thread for quite some time before I felt comfortable understanding what I was seeing. It is different than the varietal pages.

Calvin,
The leaves are clear from the FMV, they look really nice. I repotted the figs today. I thought fist to move them into the 2-3 gal pots but after I removed the figs from the 1 gals there was no question that 5 gal is a better choice. The pots were full of roots!

Tami, the Raintree honors the coupons. If you order next time, search the Internet for some codes. My 10$ shipping was because of a coupon applied at the checkout time.

Awesome Igor, I'll look for a coupon first next time.

Hi Tami,

I have read that thread many times and posted in it last year as well. Here is what I think, your tree(s) you posted pics of look the same as Micheals at the start of the post, which Herman stated were the original PN, with mostly 3 lobe leaves that resemble Ischia Black. The fingers or lobes of the leaves are a little wider with the palm portion being a bit larger as well(in comparison to Petit Aubique). Your leaves don't look shiny, yet that can be affected to some degree by the amount and or intensity of direct sun and age of a tree. Also, the trees in your pics are young, so leaf morphology may change over time.

My tree looks like what Herman has pictures of and says it's Petite Aubique. However, my tree has never made a branch with single lobe leaves on it. That may change in the future, but as of now it is what it is. It's a great tree, worthy of a place in my yard, but IMO it needs to be called Peite Negra-RT..just to keep things straight.

I feel pretty confidant that what I have is Petite Negri but I agree, it needs time to develope and to be sure we're seeing the adult leaf formation. Mine were not in much sun because of their age and diva tantrums when in sun. Mine came from Raintree.
I agree though that waiting to be sure is a good idea and nobody can fault your labelling!

Igor,
Thanks for the reply. If I wasn't nearing the end of my fig tree absolute maximum capacity, I would order a Sultane today! I have a few more varieties I will be rooting this winter. Then that is mostly it, I'll be systematically removing the less desireable/productive for a while to get things back under control. Of course, I did just find a new home for my Flanders once it goes dormant...but seriously. :)

I love Raintree's selection, but I don't love their shipping costs My experience has been very high for shipping, but nice plant material. Good luck with your fig trees, they look good.

The $10 shipping cost for 3 figs must be only for local customers.
I was interested in 2 figs; but they want $40+ for shipping to the east coast...

[E: See my happier post further down.]

George,
I am on the West Coast, true, but as I mentioned above, I used a coupon. Search the Internet for their coupons and use it at the checkout time.

Calvin,
Every time I look at  my yard, I realize that my absolute capacity was at its absolute limit last time I looked :D
But then where do I put a freshly rooted cutting in a few weeks time when it is ready?..

I've ordered lots from Raintree over the years. Any yes, it usually cost me 30 bucks for shipping. But if I had to drive all the way to California to pick them up my order, it would cost me a heck of a lot more than 30 dollars! When I think about that....I feel a heck of a lot better! :)

Nice information, thanks for sharing.

Best,

Looks like awesome service. Wish they delivered here!

Referring to my above post:
I am not sure if it was me or the web site doing something wrong.
I got my 2 figs (Sultane and Pastillere) and the S/H came a reasonable $21.95.
Right now they have also a 20% off (in free stuff, not money).

I couldn't find a $10 shipping coupon either, maybe it expired but those usually show up on the coupon sites as well.  Igor has some superior searching techniques, perhaps? ;)

I just looked for a coupon and couldn't find anything.  But I did find a 3 in 1 grafted apple for low chill hour locations (such as Houston) on Raintree's webpage.  I think I will have to buy that!
