Raised growing platform

In anticipation of growing figs in containers for the first time, last fall I built a raised 24' x 6' platform on which to set the containers. It's located close to my winter storage shed for ease of moving the eventually heavy pots. I plan on building a south facing 6' plywood "wall" at the rear of the platform running its entire length. I'm also thinking about constructing a hinged wood framed "canopy" covered with heavy clear plastic or corrugated poly carbonate sheets to protect the plants from occassional heavy rain. These panels would be hinged so as to lie flat against the back side of the plywood wall  when not in use so I can swing them up and over the wall to guard the plants when needed. The effect would be similar to a movable green house roof- affording the plants protection from a damaging downpour and, as the season progresses, give the figs warmth by radiating heat energy from the wall during the late afternoon and night.
Has anyone tried something similar to this? What do you think of its success?

Sounds like a great idea.  May be a little small once you start lusting after certain varieties but you can always build another 3 or 4  :)

Nice work Rich...I think it will work out great, especially the corrugated poly carbonate roof to protect from serious rainfall...also nice to have the raised platform to do any detail work on your plants...will definately save your back...good luck.

Rich,
What about putting some velcro strips on the east, west and north sides so you can add netting during the peak critter theft times?
Otherwise my only worry is the 6 foot height of the roof once stuff takes off as you won't want your plants too close to the poly carb in the heat of the day. I guess if you keep stuff pruned it won't be an issue, but I've had fig plants that were babies grow 6 feet the first year (Atreano, Nuhurskii, RdB, etc.). Is there a way to add thermal mass in the way of a heat sink into that wall for winter storage?
I do understand you will have the roof hinged, I was thinking about the height if you used netting.
Do you have a timber framer or stress skin panel builder in your area? If so you can get scrap pieces of stress skin panels that are extremely good for insulating things (again thinking of winter storage and the south facing wall.
Anyway . . . good luck.

mmigniva, Thanks for the input. The panels would only be in place during the threat of a heavy rain so even if the plants were above that height ( I plan to prune) they would only be scrunched for a short time. I also plan to use netting over the entire platform. I'd feel safer storing the figs inside.

Rich, just curious. How high off the ground is the floor of the platform?

Mike, Its about 16"-so I can get the mower underneath the front and rear edges.

Rich, was wandering how the back will hold up after you get
into hundreds of 20-30 gallon pots. LOL

Mike, A lot of thought went into the size of the platform. I figure it will eventually hold 14-16 3' pots. That's enough for me!! ( I hope)

Nice,
i would like to see a photo whew is done
