Ray Given's fig talk, MS fall 2007

Recently Ray gave a fig talk at Crystal Springs, MS and some of his evaluations
were a little surprising. He calls Celeste and Osborn Prolific as so-so's and Alma, King, and Negronne as duds.

I consider Celeste the "Little Queen" of figs with such a sweet delicate taste. I mulch heavy and keep watered in hot, dry periods and this works to prevent
fruit drop. Osborn Prolific has been a very good fig in all respect. Alma has also
been a good producer of very good figs. King is one of my favorites and I look
forward to the heavy crop of brebas each year. Negronne is a surprise as all I read is good reviews.

This is my experience and 2 cents worth and that's what it's all about. Different
areas, different fruiting, etc, etc.

Jack

Hi Jack, would you, please, also mention which varieties he rated among the top

Ottawan Z5

Ray' favorites are Hardy Chicago, Conadria, Hunt, Kadota, LSU Improved, LSU
Purple, Neveralla, Nero, and Patrick' Super Giant.

His 2nd tier favorites are Barese White, Florentine, LSU Hollier, Lindhurst White,
Sal's, and Texas Everbearing.

His so-so's are Brown Turkey. Celeste, Excel, Osborn Prolific, and Yvonne.

His duds are Alma, Brunswick, King, Negronne, and Tena.

Yes, theres a similar posting on this subject on "Garden Web Fig Forum". Myself and wife like King & Negronne. Hope to have a larger crop next year. And if I have more space I would plant another King. I suppose preference is something difficult to quantify.

Hello all,

I'm the one who attended Ray's presentation and reported from my notes.  I posted this info at GW Fig Forum.  Here's the URL:
