RdB Breba

Here's a couple RdB Breba that were just picked. As far as a breba goes I'd give it a 10 out of 10.
Heck these breba were better than most main crop figs.

Art, very nice. Was that in a greenhouse?

Mike, I overwintered it in the greenhouse. So it got an early start. It's been outside since the beginning of may.

Art, did your RdB go dormant in your greenhouse?  If not, might those be main crop figs instead?  I have some trees that I kept in active growth in my greenhouse (though not very active) and they've already produced ripe fruit since I moved them outside in April but they were all main crop figs, I believe.

Harvey, My greenhouse trees were dormant from mid Dec. to the beginning of march. I think those were the only breba on that tree.

They do look yummy ! Hope I can get one from my tree this year !

Art,as far as i know a Ronde de Bordeaux only develops Maincrop figs!

But those look delicious! I am looking forward to taste my Ronde's figs first time this year.

Art ,
Nice and early figs!
Feigenbaum is right! Ronde d Bordeaux should not ripen brebas.
To my knowledge the only Bordeaux ripening brebas seems to be the Violette .

You cheated. That's not fair.
You have to give up the remaining ones now;)

Way to go.

Rafed, LOL! I figure if I can't live in a warm climate, I'd bring it to me.

Francisco & Christian, Wow I didn't know that. I was sure that I had the real deal. If so I'm going to have to look for a known RdB.

Art,

Why shouldn't it be RdB?

Fruit looks pretty much like it.
Maybe it has to do with that short dormancy in your GH?

How does the leaves look like, as RdB is kind of easy to recognize.
If it turns out to be something else ( but you gave 10/10, so it has to be one ;-) )
Contact me and i will see what i can do...!

take care,

Christian,

Thanks Buddy for the kind offer.
I'm pretty sure it's the real deal. You guys just had me wondering.
Everything seems to match up with the leaves and the fruit. The person I received it from
hasn't been on here for a year or so.

Those are Ronde de Bordeaux Breba.
Fig tree will surprize at times,so a couple of ripe breba is just that,a good surprize.

Thanks Vasile, I was surprised to hear that it's rare for RdB to have breba.

Herman, I agree.  I have a 3-4 breba on my Ronde de Bordeaux that are looking like they will stay on to ripen.  Mine was overwintered in a garage.

Col De damas and ronde de bordeaux can have brebas, just generally it is rare and they tend to drop, and extra bonus for sure.

I had two ripening RdB eaten by critters a week ago. There was a third and after that disappointing assault, I covered it. Decided after reading this thread that now was the time to pick it. And I did. Oh man, was it good!!!  It could have stayed another day or two on the tree but I didn't want to risk it since it will be awhile before another is close to 'ripe'.

RdB is one good-tasting fig!

Nice going Art, Enjoy

Ronde de Bordeaux is a main crop fig only, but it can produce breba in rare instances. Per Pierre baud book, no or very few brebas on this variety.

Hi,
Most unifera trees can occasionally have brebas.
In a nursery here, last September they were selling "Ice crystal".
I bought one tree to try (The small tree has 3 trunks) . In April, some trees at the nursery -wintered sleeping in a GH - had few brebas ... But not mine in ground in the garden.
My IC is now starting to show the maincrop since last week.
IC is definitively unifera .
RDB and "Pastiliere" are known to sometimes make few brebas.

Super early brebas for the Northeast.  Good job Art!  Thanks for posting.

It's the greenhouse.  One happy fig.  :)

The greenhouse surely helped me with the early crop. My figs that were over wintered in my garage are at least a month behind.

It could be that RdB breba are very sensitive to cool weather and don't produce if exposed to temps below a certain number, maybe 40F?  Or maybe certain amount of time below a certain temp or any combination of too wet, too cool or too windy.  What was the minimum temp in your greenhouse?

I had my thermostat set at 43.
