RdB leaves w/o roots

In the image, the top 2 are RdB I got for Harvey, and the bottom one is from my own RdB tree that was from Kerry's cutting last year.  They've been in the box since Jan 31. (18 days ago).

The one with roots is a Yellow Long Neck.  The other YLN rooted in 9 days, this one pushed its first root on day 14.  I'm about to cup it.

Two of the RdB's are leafing out and the other one has some green bumps on the nodes. But no signs of roots at all.  Just callus and the white bumps (root initials?).

Temp is a constant 73F and humidity about 88%.  Rootbox is covered by a thick bath towel for darkness.

Should I go ahead and put those 2 RdBs in a cup and put in my humidity bin with light?  Will that allow the leaves to provide energy to the cutting until it finally puts out roots?  Or should I pinch the leaves and keep in root box?

The humidity bin (right next to the root box) shows about 78F (not sure if that's accurate, but must be at least 73F like the root box) and humidity is 83%.

if it has callus, i would move it to the cup, one with leaves. the other one without the leaves, i would keep it in the box and monitor.

Here's a couple of closer pictures of the two that have a leave poking out.  Does that look callused enough?

hmm... not really. usually, cutting with leave won't have serious issue in the baggie for awhile. however, with high humidity and the temp, it will turn mushy sooner or later. the question is how long before that happens. 18 days aren't too long. usually if i don't see any response from the cutting in 4 weeks, i'll move them to cup. if the leaves are sitting in water or collecting water, i would consider moving also. if they are not running into any issue, i would leave it in the box and monitor.

okay.. i'll keep them there a few more days and watch them.  There's no condensation inside the box.  So maybe it's okay.

Thanks Pete!

My RDB shots also grew leaves without any roots unlike the other 3 varieties i propagated with it in the same weather and conditions. probably something genetic...

i don't remember what happened while i was rooting RdB. only thing i remember was it came in with number of green cuttings and it's the only one that survived. it was hard green cutting. grew slow at first then just starting shooting up. grows like a weed.

I am currently rooting some RdB cuttings and they are doing the same thing

Yes.. they do grow like weeds.  I had 6 RdB cuttings last year and all 6 grew very well.  Gave away 5 of the trees.  Those are probably all dead by now. lol.  I just don't remember getting leaves before roots last year.  But I think it did take about 3.5 weeks..

I checked them this evening and one of them finally has one small root about 3/16" long.  Maybe more tomorrow.   One though, is getting moldy right on the bottom. :(  I tried to clean it off, but it doesn't look good.

It's amazing how much difference one day can make in rooting.  My second box of cuttings that I started at the same time as the RdBs and YLNs has exploded with roots.  Yesterday, there was one that one a few very short roots, about 1/16" (Can't remeber what it is off hand).  The others had no roots.  Today, an LSU Tiger has a whole group of 1/2" roots and all the other cutting have some roots poking out.

I'm going to be very busy this weekend.  I like days like this!
