Re Black Mission

Is Black Mission taste sweet in breba or main crop to get idea ?
In general, most fig tastes better in breba or main crop ?

Hi pacifica,
It is commonly admitted that main crop figs taste better than brebas.
Main crop figs tend to have stronger flavors and tend to be smaller .
Some brebas are as good as main crops though. It depends on the strain that you consider.
I have one unknown that has good brebas ... I only wished it was more productive ... One can't have it all ... At least for now, I don't ... So I keep searching for that elusive strain ...

1. main generally taste better than its breba

2. Main generally smaller than breba

3. Main generally has lighter skin colors

However, It is not written in stone, There are many factor at ripen stage, like strain Etc, In our cooler climate end of fall, My brother has a brown turkey alike tree, Its bears same size figs for both breba and main, Its main figs are ripen at mid of September which is less sweeter than breba figs, Possible are, 1). Both sun light and temperature are weaker. 2), More rain, it is much less sweeter after rain.

I think that your black mission will bear great figs for both breba and main, I look forward for my black mission bearing figs as well.

I do agree with you that brebas are not as good taste as main crop, but size of breba is bigger for sure. Thanks for your responds.

Your black mission fig looks good, and even main fig look quite big now, When will breba fig ripen? it seems that black mission grow well in cooler climate here.

Also, did you fertilizer your tree?, it might make sweeter fig, So far, I mix tomatoes fertilizer with manure tea/ lime with water, and fig tree love it and grow faster and all yellow leaves/slow grow problems are gone, Even young desert king, It bears some main figs.

I got black mission few months ago, I plant them in ground but it doesn't grow very much and dropped its breba, last week, I checked its roots and I find that I added too much sheep manures at root area, It dried up as hard shell, I fixed this problem and gave it couple heavy dose of fertilizers hoping that it will bear some main fig.

Those ripen fruits are brebas and main crop are on it way. Since I plant this Black Mission in large container, I actually added some little chicken manure (composted) in Spring with some limestones A friend of mine got an unknown young tree fig from his friend via airlayer last July and planted this 5 ft young fig (green outside with reddish inside and figlet is big) in ground, I gave him a bag of chicken manure composted and told him to add only 1/3 of chicken manure in Fall but he added 2/3  by mistake then 1/3 in Spring. Believe or not, his fig tree got over 100 figlets in April, all figlets are looking good and healthy except about 10 figlets got black mark. Just amazing my friend.
