Really a Black Mission?

This is my first post on this forum.

I bought a Black Mission fig tree from a local nursery.  It was a pretty nice size tree in a 3 gallon pot for $17.

But now I am questioning whether or not it really is a BM.  My tree looks eerily similar to the following thread I found:   http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg0814113528004.html

Can a Black Mission have this leaf pattern?

I am in Florida and am concerned about ending up with a variety that i have to trash because of an open eye

I have seen to mature trees that have that leaf pattern on portions of the tree. It is not the form that you normally expect. However, Black Mission has a wide range of leaf shapes. It is quite possible that yours is a BM. Fruit will tell.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome, last spring I bought a black mission from an online nursery out of Florida that I had questioned. The leaves are similar to yours but the lobes are skinnier. I was told that it is probably black mission and that they can present different leaf patterns like Jon said. I'm still waiting for it to fruit so I can know for sure.

I don't know much but they both look exactly like my Violette De Bordeaux's.

Tami, they do look very very similar and from just a few feet away they look the same but when I put my black mission and VdB side by side I can see small differences, and after looking at m5allen's pics again I think ours are the same.

Is there a difference between a west coast/california black mission and a southeast/florida black mission? I went to another local nursery who had black missions and they had the skinny 5 lobe leaves as well.

m5 there are different strains of mission just like some other fig types.

But what I mean, is there a variety of BM that is more prominent here in FL?  Most of the BMs I have seen in Florida look like mine and Ryan's with the long, skinny lobes, and I have seen others comment that this leaf pattern is not like a "typical" Black Mission.

I can't answer that m5allen, the first black mission I killed came from lowes and the leaves where big and totally different, then again it came from lowes so no telling what it was. All I know is I can't wait for this BM to put out some fruit because it shows a lot of signs that most people associate with great figs; leaf shape, reddish pink leaf stems, and reddish pink buds at the growing tips. I hope it doesn't let me down, lol. Good luck with yours.

M5 -  after looking back on some disks from a few years ago at my monrovia strain mission plant you can see its leaves .

Also can see the leaves the following year on same plant the one with the figs on it -last picture.
Yours leaves may change as well with age.

I would bet that most commercially grown fig trees in Florida will come from Monrovia so whatever they call it, it will be consistent, maybe, LOL

Martin, the shape of the leaves in your first couple pics look the same for sure, I'm interested to see if the ones me and m5 have will change in the future also.
