Any recommendations on how to train this Petite Negra? I received it this way and although I like the way it looks, I don't know if I want it to grow horizontally like it is. Suggestions.

Put a stake in the pot and tie it to it vertical.

I'd stake and tie also. Ties may have to be tightened  (straightened) gradually , maybe I'm just overly cautious.

What Scot said... But you may have to do it over a few days, if the limb is brittle. Bamboo stakes are usually strong enough.

Unfortunately I tried putting a stake in it to make it vertical but the wood is too hard and wont budge. 

Put it in a new pot with the root ball turned in a way that gives the tree the vertical look you are going for

prune off botom leaves, take it out of the pot, turn it sideways so the stem is upright and repot in a larger pot to acommodate the soil mass, then stake it
