Record low

Our area saw record lows yesterday measured -6°F (-21°C) Monday morning.

I have most of my figs protected, some barely protected, but my dad's Brooklyn White was left unprotected since it is 15' -20' tall.  My three pomegranate trees are unprotected. The good thing is there's at least 10 inches of snow on the ground that acts as an insulation to the trunk of the trees.
This will be a good test for my figs and other uncommon fruit trees.
I did a good job with my greenhouse, the lowest temperature was 48° with only a little electric heater.
It's fig season in Australia, and my uncle is teasing me telling me about it. It's in the 90's in Sydney.

Bass its 30 farenheit here in toronto Today, but the last two days were bone chilling. Toronto has weird weather in the winter good thing we dont get too many of those -30 celcius days or else I dont think I would make it. Windchill here will bring the temps down 10 degrees or more wish we had mountains north of us lol.

Every winter I decide to move, but I change my mind in spring.
Jon, any houses available on Fulmar st?

Bass when I win the lotto im moving somewhere hot zone 10+ a place were the word frost doesn't even exist.

Hey Bass!  Where is all that mild winter weather we are suppose to be having???? Huh?  Just teasing!  Spring comes to my zone in March.

My GH temp is at 50 with no heater running at the moment.  I've been running it daily if the temps drop below 32.  COME ON SPRING!

I purposely lied about my prediction of the mild weather. Just to keep you feeling optimistic.

Bass, Yes, there is one reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal dog. Looked at it a couple weeks ago. Can't believe that anyone ever lived in it.

my fig room hit a low of 34f last few nights and I know it was in the teens outside. A little insulation and small electric heater has kept it between 34 and 38 so far this winter. come on spring hurry up ran out of fig jam last week and the dehydrated ones in the freezer did not last long once the kids found them....

I have been real lucky here in MA. I have a garage with 2x6 construction and R-19 insulation that is in an attached garage. It's been in the teens, on average, the past week or two. The last two days have been around 5 at night. With NO electric heater, its been around 34 to 36 degrees as a low in the garage. The trees have been up against the house wall.

Bass,

You inspired me to check out the record temps for my area. I'm also in zone 6 but some sources call it zone 6b (or even zone 7 according to the national arbor society).

I found this informative little chart on my area:

The one day minimums are what really caught my attention! The absolute coldest I've seen it in 11 winters so far has just been +1F. That occurred just last year. Years previous to that had only been a low of +9.

I wonder what your chart would look like?

Move to Atlanta ;)

Bass,

Last January I was in Calgary and Edmonton, Ab.
It was -35F in Calgary and -50F in Edmonton. And this was straight out temps! No windchill.

What's more amazing was people were going about their business as usual. Walking in the streets doing what ever. Guess they're used to it.

My fuel cap/covers are spring loaded, They kept popping off.

Any chance I might find a fig tree growing in the wild there?

Gotta love it!

Everyone move to Atlanta!  I love all of you folks, and I need more fig friends nearby ;) ;)

  • JCA

I may move to Homestead Florida soon where it usually stays above freezing.  The all time record low here is around 10F in 1989 and 1899.  Last time below 20F is February 1996.  You can grow citrus here most years.

Sydney is the place to be for fruit growing. It stays above freezing.

My uncle grows Mangos, bananas, Figs, Olives, also apples grow there. Not too many places you can see all types of fruit growing together.
Also the Mediterranean coast is among the best suitable for growing a large variety fruit trees.

Hey Bass, You hit the 1000 posts milestone - woo hoo :) .

JCA; I lived, for 10 years, about 2 hrs from Homestead. Yes, it pretty much qualifies as a frost free part of the US. The fruit farms grow many things in addition to citrus. Such as avacados, mamey, sugar apple, lychees & longans, mangos, etc. A few places even manage to grow jackfruit, rambutan & some other unexpected stuff..

I didn't visit any of the farms down there but I did get the oportunity to visit the Fruit & Spice Park ( a must stop if you're ever in that neck of the woods). It's pretty impresive the diversity of tropical type fruits that can be grown there with just a little effort.

If anyone is ever down that way I reccommend that you stop at a couple of the roadside fruit stands. You may be suprised at what you'll find.
