Red Lebanese (Bekaa) Main 2016

This has been an excellent performer for me the last two years and this is the first ripe fig from the tree this year.  This tree is in its 3rd season and is growing in a 5 gallon SIP.  Next year it will either be planted in the ground or moved up to a larger container.  The figs have a rich berry flavor with some seed crunch that is not overly sweet.

Steve, very nice looking fig. How does this fig compare to your Mt Etna type figs? Would you say that it broadly belongs in the same category despite the different skin color?

Last year I had the opportunity to compare Red Lebanese to the Mt. Etnas and it definitely had a richer flavor.  The flavor profile has some similarities though.  A couple others in my collection (St. Rita and Bari) also have similarities in taste.  The Mt. Etna figs also had a somewhat different shape (more elongated stem).  This year (since I moved a few months ago) my Mt. Etna figs are too young to produce fruit.  I should say that so far I haven't been all that impressed with the flavor of the Mt. Etnas I grow (Takoma Violet, Sal'sEL and Marsielles vs Black) compared to other varieties.  They are worth growing though because they are very reliable and productive growing in the ground here.

Ditto what Leon said, I have a young plant, and hoping it works for me. You're a zone ahead, so probably a month more at most here, which is great as September here is a fine month! Good to know!

Sorry I never got back on this. They were awesome! The plant has over 30 figs this year. I thought it had a little different flavor from the typical berry type figs.

I hear RL Beeka valley is hard to root. I got one as a freebie, and no luck.

Any one dare to comparethe taste to red Sicillian /polermo/ sheepshead?

Lewi -- I received two RL Bekaa sticks last December as payback for a favor.  They both rooted very easily.  You should probably try again.

I'm looking forward to comparing taste again this year. i had so many new figs last year it's all a blur. I do remember I liked it a lot. I also want to compare to Bass's Lebanese Red, both have figs this year. I'll compare to Sheepshead and LSU Red for that matter too.

I've had both the Bass version and the Marius version and they both good but quite different.  The Marius version has more of a berry profile than the Bass version if memory serves.

Good info, I think i got them confused as far as taste, I had so many new figs to taste last year, this year some too. Speaking of bass I have the BFF fig, it has fruit too, but rather small, it is bud grafted unto Strawberry Verte.

I would do so If I could trade for the bekka valley red with someone who has older trees... ;)

My rooting has become more successful with coir, but, before I tried that, I just stuck them in pot with soil...which actually works well enough for some cultivars.

Just ate my first RLBV brebas and they were delicious, very  rich and sweet with
an after taste that lingers in your mouth. Much better than the RdB's I've been eating.
