Red Sicilian (finally!) and Atreano

Last year Northeastnewbie gave me red sicilian cuttings I was really excited about and they *all* died.  This year he gave me another 8.  It looked for a while like they were all duds, which was particularly disheartening because I've had damn near 100% success rooting everything else this year.  Then last week one of them had shot one wimpy limp pathetic root.  We gently cupped that one up and moved it up to the grow lab to get some special babying.  Now it is showing roots visible through the cup and a little leaf on top!

As long as we're uploading pictures, I also discovered these roots today on an Atreano cutting compliments of Joann!

Good job Greg. Looks good

lol

Yes I know the feeling about the wimpy stick that roots. What is funny, you would think the fat ones would burst with roots. A pat on the back for you

Hey Greg, nice work on these cuttings. What method did you start the red sicilian? I bought some red sicilian from northeastnewbie on eBay this year and have been trying to root them using the new bag method. I have also had a harder time with these than my other cuttings. I lost two cuttings to mold and I have three left- one of which has pretty good roots but no signs of leaves and I am getting ready to pot up. The other cuttings that have small leaves but no signs of roots and I have been working on them for about two months.

Congratulations!

Yeah thats how it is with scionwood you just never know and reason why when i sell i say no returns.
Sometimes its that precious one that we try so hard and poof  - been there done that !
But no one roots and makes a producing plant 100% of the time that i know of with scionwood .  ; )

ztfree I used a clear box with damp (a little wetter than moist but not wet) sphagnum.  I scarify all of my cuttings between the bottom node and the second node until I see the green layer, then trim any excess wood below the bottom node, then dip them in clonex rooting gel up to the second node.

Your problem is exactly the problem I had with them, just nothing then the mold.  Same problem I had with them last year.  I treated them identical to every other cutting and all of the other varieties I got from Al rooted just fine.  Its just this red headed problem child!
