I think I read in one of JD's posts that dark figs have red veins in the buds when they start growing.  The pictures are very beautiful!  I wouldn't mind having posters like that for my walls.

Anyway, back to figs, so - are the red veins on ALL dark figs or are they only in certain varieties?

My Celeste(?) is a very dark fig, but I haven't noticed red veins in the leaf buds only the figlets had a red tinge to them when they started to develop.  The pictures are not as good as JD's, but you can see the reddish color on the figlets

The whole color thing has me perplexed also!  After the figlets grow a bit they turn green.  The pictures with the dark smaller figs was taken on May 8.

The tag on the tree just says Celeste - but - in the world of figs, who knows?  

I had no idea there was such confusion and contradictory information about figs.  But then why would I since my only interest when I was young was to raid the family tree come Sept. lol

I am also happy about the growth on the lower part of the tree to help build up the trunk caliper and also to give me options for pruning.  This year I am letting it grow without pruning or pinching so it could establish itself.

And I also have a wish list I am working on and will post soon!!

Not all dark figs will show red tip, or red vein. Some only show under certain condition. My Kathleen's Blk will show red bud and red leaf stem when the weather cools down.

Many of mine show this in spring then it dissipates until i prune the growing tips later for figs and resulting new growth brings the color display back again until leaf gets bigger.

All dark figs do not display red veins. However, as I stated most recently and several more veteran an experience fig growers have stated before me and repeatedly "I have learned that red veins are an indicator for a fruit with dark skin, with dark pulp, and with better than average taste." There may be a few outliers but none in my collection of fig trees.

Please keep sharing the photos and info about your so-called Celeste because it is likely mislabeled and the indicators say it has potential...

I have a few outliers, if 'dark pulp' is an indicator.  My Beall (UCD) doesn't have dark pulp/flesh (tannish/yellow on many), and neither does my Brown Turkey (pinkish flesh), but both definitely produce the red leaf veins. 

OK - I see the error of my reading, That's what happens sometimes when I'm doing this in the middle of the night :)

It is very pretty - of course the skill of the photographer helps.

Thanks Jason. I will quantify my statement in that post...Brown Turkey has red veins, damn...that is the ultimate outlier.
