Reflective tape works great

I start a topic a month ago http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/War-on-bird-starts-6443637
to deal with bird problem.
I tried many methods:
1. owl decoy, birds still around.
2. solar owl decoy that rotate head every 2 minutes, same thing no use.
3. bag or plastic container to cover the figs, very time consuming, and very easy to scratch the fig and drop the fruit by accident.
4. bird trap. caught nothing for a month.
5. I haven't tried sonic or ultrasonic repellent. But I have a feeling it won't work. Because I setup one to repel deer. And a few to repel rodent. Nothing works.

Finally, this seems to work. with the reflective tape hanging on tree. I still see birds around in my yard. But they didn't eat my fig. I finally harvest 50 nice & ripe fig this morning. I am not sure if this is going to work forever, but at least it work for me at this moment. I am showing how I attach the reflective tape using tree tags.

Thanks for the info!  last year crows found my figs and I got almost none because they would come as they rippened and clean them out every morning while I was at work.  I came home one day at lunch and about 5 crows flew out from inside the fig tree.  I didnt know what was happening till I saw that.  This year unfortualy because of the rain the figs here just flat out arnt ripening :(  however maybe next year if its a good growing season Ill def. give this a try.  where do you get the reflective tape?

Glad to hear it's working for you, Jimmy.  I've having a small amount of bird damage using the scare tape, but not very bad.

Thanks for sharing this, Jimmy!
Very smart idea. I will definitely give it a try.

Thank you Jimmy. I also saw some strong black plastic netting at Jon's covering a hug Vista fig tree well so I am looking for a similar product locally too.

I'm trying this out now myself.  I bought some last week.  So far, the birds are staying clear of the trees.

I'm just looping the tape over a branch and stapling it with a small paper stapler.   Works great.

I'm having good success with the scare tape I buy from a local vineyard/orchard supply house for $4.50 for 500'.  I wonder if the product on Amazon works any differently.

I think it's the same stuff.  Just on smaller rolls and more expensive.   Silver on one side, reflective red on the other?

Dave, that's what I'm using, but the Amazon link is a product with a halographic pattern.  Maybe it makes the birds dizzy! lol

This will only work for so long.

After awhile the birds will get used to the tape and actually then use the tape as toys.

My Too will destroy yards of this stuff in a so single sitting.

Chris, in Hawaii they have found reflective products to greatly reduce bird damage and that is in an environment with year-round production.  If birds are certain to be accustomed to such products, I think it would be in such an environment.  I'm sure that sometimes birds will begin to ignore these things but it's pretty difficult to predict the likelihood of that happening.

Quote:
With the first production we lost 30% to 50% from Mynah birds, White Eye birds and Cardinals. After stringing Mylar tape and a variety of bird deterrents from Japan we could reduce the damage to 5% to 10% of the total production.
