Finished picking Muscadines today and wondered over to the fig nursery hoping to score a couple of tasty figs. Had a couple of decent Sal's and noticed that my Calvert, Deanna, and Sucrette all had nice large, swollen figs not yet ripe. Since rain was starting and expected to be heavy tonight I determined it would be best to put them under roof in the hoop house. As I picked up the last one I happened to notice one of the four figs on my nearby JH Adriatic had gotten ripe without me or the resident tree rat being aware of it! There it was on the lowest limb, hanging straight down, heavy with juice and sugar, with those sugar spots all over it, kinda ugly in a way. I think my heart rate increased. Here was a fig I had heard so much about and I was going to get to taste it for the first time from my own little two year tree! Just as I reached down to get it I happened to jostle the tree with my knee and it either dropped or “jumped” into my hand. It was mushy, but not split. Was it going to be ruined? As quick as that I tore it open and plopped half in my mouth. OMG!!!!!! Then the other half. The closest thing to a religious experience I have had lately. Yes I have had many good figs this year. (MBVS, Sals, Calvert, Verte, Scotts Black, Malta Black, RDB, and several others) This fig wins hands down! I don't want a better fig, I just want a lot more of this fig. If you don't have this fig and live where you can grow it, beg, borrow, steal, buy, or trade for one now! (No, I don't have any for sale. Just the one, which is now going to get a lot more attention from me.) Yes, I had my phone in my shirt pocket, never even occurred to me to take a picture.
