repotted figs today.. i'm in trouble.

repotted Genovese Nero, Ronde dB, JH Adriatic, Calvert, Ischia White, Black Madeira, Longue D'Aout, CdDB, and CdDN today. i'm completely filled to gills with trees right now. and there are more trees coming in.. and ones i rooted over the winter.. and UCD cuttings.

this fig thing is going out of control. i might have to borrow martin's 50 gal steel drum soon.

Yeah I'm having this same problem.  Repotting my figs this week and just got the last of my new arrivals from this year it's just ridiculous.  There's just no way I can keep all of these.

I'm repotting my carnivores and having this same problem.  You'll see what I mean in a few days.

The good news is...they make GREAT gifts.

You guys shouldn't be complaining. Its the kind problem you have always wished for, isn't it. Lots and lots of figs to play with. Many are probably reading this with envy. I know i am. :p

Does your backyard look more like a nursery than a yard? I'm rethinking the landscape from dry desert to fig forest.

I am gifting many of mine away. I will only keep one of each variety I am growing. No room for duplicates.
I am hoping to meet up with a bunch of local fig folk soon and I plan on bringing all my extras. Come and get em! If there is anything extra I will put an ad on here "free figs to good, loving home. Must be somewhat crazy."

As I read the post I got all excited thinking I might circumvent the year(s) long process and be able to acquire some seasoned trees.
When I saw Bullets location my heart sank.  I'm in Ohio and he is WAY out west.  In my mind I was rehearsing my begging routine and my bubble burst.
Nice post BTW.

LOL - just wait till you have to root prune down the road on a rotating basis each and every year.

Are you suggesting they are not out of control yet ?
Still got a way to go ?  ;-)

Fig Fever

Wait until your fig twig babies grow up and no longer in 1-3 gal containers.

If you want to get rid of trees just put out a sign in the front yard saying free, they will be gone quickly.

I just joined in January and I have so many cuttings, I lost count.  I thought I was going to have at least five trees.. I gave two rooted cuttings away so far.. I don't what I,m going to do..
You guys warned me about this, but I didn't believe you!

You can always try Craigslist. There may be some locals willing to give you some cash for rare fig trees.

martin,

i'm not looking forward to root pruning at all.. i have to do root pruning latest next year for my 10 gals. they have been in there 2 yrs after this year, and i know they are getting closed to being root bound. i really should do it this yr, but as usually, i miss the window for being lazy.

i already have enough trees for me and my wife to enjoy figs during the season and eat handful everyday.. now i have 9 additional trees that will give figs this year. and next year.. i'll have 30 or so additional trees.. i mean, sure i love figs and more the merrier.. but the issue is lack of winter storage area. heck, summer display area too. like someone said, my whole back and front yard will look like a nursery.

over the weekend, we planted 4 japanese cherry blossom trees in the front yard. i was looking into the hole and thinking.. "they are all going to die". it's soft clay around here. these trees will sit on water for days on end. we had some maple trees in that spot, and they never did well. if i plant figs in the yard, i'm pretty sure the figs will not do too well, and when it rains, they will soak up water like sponge. need to figure something out really quick. i love my trees. hate to get rid of them due to space issue. i get only the trees i really wanted. even with keeping only one of them without duplicate, it's well over 40 now. maybe my wife won't mind parking her car outside during the winter..

Well all the trees are different. Maybe you can start weeding out the ones that are good, but not as good as *insert variety here*... gift away your least favorite ones by taste or perhaps productivity. I have way more varieties than I can care for but I am trialing them in my iffy climate. I will not keep all the varieties I have but will not know which ones to cull until they've had a chance to prove themselves.

nicole,

the problem is it takes 4-6 yrs before the tree is mature and gives full flavor. and some figs will not taste good at all till 4-6 yrs later. and some of the figs will improve every year until they are at mature age. so.. it becomes juggling lot of trees until you know what you really want to keep.

last year, Kathleen's Black and White Greek wasn't good at all. but if you read the forum, they are praised all over the place. i'm thinking it was their first year. then, this will be their second year giving figs. if they improve, they will stay at least 2 more yrs with me before i can say if i'm going to keep them.

Yes, I wasn't sure how long you've had some of these trees. Trialing means you are in it for the long haul. I do have one slight advantage - if you want to call it that - in that I am mostly interested in varieties that give brebas so that makes the weeding a little easier. I will keep a small handful that give main crops that everyone rates as excellent because I will have a small greenhouse - but not enough space to keep more than a few.

I was looking for 1 or 2 good fig trees and now I caught the virus neverenoughfigidus lol

In 3 years from now I will bein heaven !
:)

You probably have way to many white types.  lol

Never stop, Pete. I'm going until I am immersed in a fig forest. You cannot fight the sickness once bitten by Ficus obsessicus.

Oh my, is this what I have to look forward to. I too find myself checking out nurseries, Ebay, and scrolling through the UC Davis site when I know I already have plenty of cuttings to keep watch over. It is a conversation starter! People are surprised when I tell them " Yes you can grow figs in PA".

And thats just the start of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

It seems like a lot of people are going through the same thing this year. I have been really stressing over clearing out duplicates and varieties that I can get rid off. I have way to many also and I got a nice taste of root pruning and repotting larger trees its a lot of work. Even if I keep one of everything except the rarest trees I still don't know how I will store all of them when the trees get big.

i guess one of the solution is to plant them in ground if you have the land and weather cooperates. otherwise.. large green house, or 4 car garage with only 2 ports being used. :)

If not giving them away or selling, you could plant them in vacant lots, community gardens and such. That way, the trees live and people can enjoy them. Plus, that gives you a reserve of cuttings off-site, in case yours go down.
