If you root prune your fig, then you should always have to defoliate or remove all the leaves in the Fig tree. When you disturb the root ball and prune the roots, you have less roots to provide for the same leaves on that tree, that you cause an strees on your tree and it react by dropping the leaves. My best advice to you, cut all the leaves (the longer you leave them, the longer you are stressing your tree), put your tree in shade where it can receive morning sun only. Leave it there until you see that the leaves are growing again and have normal size. Also use a product call SuperThrive, it's the best product available when you repot or root prune. It greatly reduces the shock on the tree. Use 5ml per gallon.
I have repoted and prune roots fig trees and expensive bonsai all year long, including very hot summers without a problem.
