Request for Cuttings for Non-Profit

Hello,

Though I have read the figs4fun forum for several years, I'm new to this board, and I hope that it won't be considered rude to use my first post to request donations of fig cuttings!  I volunteer with Public Harvest, a non-profit organization that promotes urban tree crops and public orchards here in Oregon, and I'm trying to obtain new varieties of figs for next year's projects.

We already propagate Desert King, Negronne (Violette de Bordeaux), Lattarula, and Brown Turkey in our nursery, but that's it.

If anyone else on this forum has an excellent variety that you think would do well in the Willamette Valley, I'd love to hear from you, and can certainly provide you with a receipt as proof of your tax-deductible donation.

Please send me a message if you think you can help.  Thanks a bunch!

Matt I have a few unidentified varieites would you be interested in cuttings from them...

Hi Matt.  That is a fantastic project.

I am very happy to send some cuttings of an excellent tasting, early, and very productive modern hybrid that will be great for food production purposes.

Send me a private message with your address.

Keep up the great work my friend.

Matt,

I should have a large supply of Chico Strawberry cuttings again next Jan/Feb. It's a main crop only fig and fairly late ripening fig. With our cool summer they were not ripe until late Sept/Oct. What zone are you in? I'm not sure this excellent tasting fig would do well in your area?

I could possibly get some Mission cutting too if these interest you?

Sue

Hi Sue,

Portland and Eugene/Springfield are where our projects are focused these days.  they are both sometimes listed as zone 8 or even 9 in terms of hardiness/minimum temperature; but believe me, we're not nearly as hot as other places given those zones.  Our Sunset zone is 6.

I have heard of Mission (and Black Mission, and Spanish Mission, maybe they're all the same?) being grown in Eugene.  So it might be worth trying some of those, as well as the Chico Strawberry.  I'll mention it to you again closer to Jan/Feb as a reminder.  thanks so much Sue, and everyone else who has responded so far!

Matt

Matt,

I have two pages of 2003 hand-written notes from the late Bill Fogarty (Fig expert of Corvallis, Oregon) that I would be happy to e-mail you if you send me your e-mail address.  The Portland and Eugene microclimates allow most varieties to ripen both crops, so you should have many options that we don't!

to see what I'm doing up north of you.

I am primarily interested in known cultivars, so I can make an educated guess as to their viability in my bioregion.  Still, if you don't know the name but you do have a good bit of information on the trees (ripening time, size of mature tree, performance in drought/humidity/fog, average yield of breba and main crop) and maybe some pictures, that might be helpful for me to "fig"-ure out what to do.  I know, absolutely horrible joke, I just couldn't help it!

Let me know what info you have on them.  Thanks!
matt
