Hey Charlie, my advice it to freak out! ;) keep your plants for now but be sure they do not have fig mites... Any source that has 100% FMV infection does have or has had the "fig mite", FMV does not spontaneously show up, it is transferred from plant to plant by the fig mite. Not only that, the fig mite takes FMV to each and every bud so next season all the growths will be sick, and cuttings from the plant may root and grow very poorly.
I would personally ditch the HC, but seeing is believing. You can get a healthy one at Lowes or HD on sale for less than $10. Bigger trees at Whole Foods and local nurseries, no FMV symptoms because only collectors are crazy enough to buy sick plants. Burpee sells a healthy variety similar to HC called Letizia. You do want to at least get a healthy one (after you deal with any mites that would ruin you efforts) because varieties like HC... Etna figs... get mosaic spots on figs that cause many to drop, and the ones that ripen are more vulnerable to spoilage. Or the growths may be too weak to produce many figs to begin with, unfortunately.
