Research questions

Okay, for something I'm writing, I have a few questions:

1) Upon getting a cutting, how long would it take to get roots usually? And then for the first big leaf? And then, to put in the ground?

2) How long would it take for that cutting to grow enough to produce one fig? Let's say it's in a warm place like So Cal.

3) Anyone know what fig trees smell like being burned, or look like? Don't worry, again this is for a fictional piece, I'm not getting out my matches. :) Just thinking maybe there'd be some detail I could use, or even if they're hard to burn, easy, etc.

Okay, that's it. :)

1) it varies, but 3-6 weeks for rooting; and leaves usually come during that time. Would be ready for going in the ground in a total of 12-16 weeks.

2) some cuttings produce a fig or two the first season. I would think this happens often in S. Cal.

3) I don't know about burning figs - I don't take chances with sacrilege ;-)

1) to root, maybe 2-4 weeks or longer. depends on the cuttings and if the rooting condition is right. to big leaf that depends on the cuttings also. some will put on good size leaf rather fast while others won't.

2) to the first fig.. some of the cutting will put on the figs same yr you root them. in most cases, it's not worth keeping them on the "tree". the figs will be inferior from immature tree and it could stress the cutting. depends on the growth, you might be able to leave 1 or 2 on to taste, but it won't be as good as later yrs.

3) ask martin :)

Jujigilr, don't quote me on this but I think they burn very loud, Crackling noises...due to the gases accumulating and bursting out of the skin to release, the gases burn blue and as they come out it feeds greatly the fire so you'll see flairs here and there, this gas releases are due to the gums inside the wood and under the skin.

AWESOME!! Thank you all so much for this. And I PM'd Martin too. :)

jujigirl since you cannot pm me i answer here.

The less dry parts crackle and pop and throw off a slight sweet smell in the fire pit i use by garage which gets used mainly for
fallen leaves and or small in season pruned limbs that i pile up to more or less dry.

If whole tree i totally dry out in sun not much at all of anything
those get burned in the 55g burn barrel.

The less fortunate trees go into already "hot" burn barrel fresh when i get "paybacks" for them wasting my time - those make the most noise and actually "hiss" and also give a slight sweet odor.

Hope this helps.

THAT'S GREAT!! if you could pick a couple words to describe that sweet smell, does anything in particular come to mind? Do you burn the roots too, or just toss those?

To add to your research, dry fig leaves smell a lot like dried rose petals.

Fig leave tea tastes like a cross between Mint and Chamomile.

Wow. You guys are amazing. If it wasn't for your input I'd have to wait till summer, when my own research starts growing. :)

No one mentioned yet about the smell of fig leaves pile in an enclosed area; smelling like hose urine (or similar..).

OH MY.....good to know...both for research and my own life.... lol
