I am presently working on building a review of fig suppliers in Canada and I am wondering if any other Canadiens might have extra feedback to add.
See http://tinyurl.com/montrealfigs/wherefigs.html for details...
please keep in mind this is a draft version and there are a few mistakes...
Michal,i can see you years from now perhaps setting something up to sell fig trees perhaps?
Maybe I am to generous giving out everything for free. To do that I am going to have to become a bit more Capitalistic! What is interesting is that I already got inquiries from people asking me if I am selling figs...Since I am not selling figs I added extra information for people in Canada so they could buy them from a good place. My initial idea was just a page of figs that I have to keep as a log!
Unfortunately only Adriano is the only supplier for variety. Almost all nurseries in Vancouver do sell fig trees like DK, Vern's BT, Stella, Negronne, Peter's Honey, Kadota, Stella, Neverella, Blk Jack. Rare to find Atreano, Blk Mission.
Just a observation that made me think, Adriano's sight has a fig called Bagalhouce and describes it like this exactly the same way as the not so famous Zergas aka MiFig4Fun on ebay, he was selling this fig in the past on ebay and i never saw that name of fig anywhere before on anysite. That name i never seen before in searches on web except old leads back to ebay that are no longer there.Bagalhoucethe moonshine fig, from Pico Azores, a small white fig very sweet. That i remember well was the same description as the one Zergas Bagalhouce had on ebay .I wonder how Adriano came about his as he states he trades for figs he does not have.Just an observation as i was burned from this ebayer and hope Adriano was not.
Martin, I think I got burned in a trade Jan. 09. I know for sure I won't trade with anyone that is not a frequent participator in the fig forum. There are some reputable forum members selling on Ebay & they are good people, especially from NJ.
Grimonut Nursery in Ontario does sell mail order fig trees.
Paully22yes your so right there are many on forum and a handful on ebay that are honest. It really bothers me for someone to sell or trade a fig plant knowing its not what it actually is. Perhaps 1 day i might be selling scion on ebay (Frankfort, Illinois) to recoup some expenses as im retired. I still have this plant and perhaps 1 day will post pictures of it when it has fruit next to the real UcDavis plant .
OttawanZ5: Dinter nurseries has this note in their fruit tree catalogue list (Note that we can only supply our local market area of Southern Vancouver Island.)For Humber Nurseries do you have any experience with them? If yes what is your feedback?paully22: Unfortunately Adriano is the only one to have the biggest collection in Canada so if someone wants to order something from him he has to be very very patient.
I was at Adriano's last Mondayhe does have allot of fig trees there but not much for salesome of his trees are just loaded with fruit I managed to get a couple of trees from him but it took me a couple of hours Adriano is a professor in figs i could talk to him for hours There is another close by that sells plants and cuttings I may go see him tomorrow morning I saw is Figs for Sale SignI will post any information I find on it
MontrealerI purchased a multi-graft plum, redhaven peach and a rainier cherry tree from Dinter Nursery through a friend on the Island but no figs & all this trouble was for getting the rainier cherry plant). The cost of shipping was steep. However, all three trees are dead now after one winter. My guess is that the rootstock was selected for local consumption on Vancouver Island. No experience with Humber nurseries because I opted for Grimo then.
OttawanThe prices at humber seem to be a bit more steep then at Grimo. For a 2 gallon pot they are charging 60$.
Marjo -- any idea what variants Adriano trees are that were loaded with figs? I know for sure 2 variants that will give alot of figs are Desert King & Gillete.
The_Montreal_Fig That is why I opted for Grimo... the prices.Paully22I have two Desert King plants rooted in the spring of 2008, 4ft+ high, and each has only one Breba. I am waiting for the time when they will be loaded.
Paully22 --I was there for a couple of hours I'm not sure but I think he said it was a tree from the Island in the Azores or something like that can't recall what he called it The man as trees from just about every corner of the worldit was to much information to take in in 2 hours I have to go see him again for more educationBut this time I should take notes
marjo: This perhaps what he ment.CapelasIt's trees are slow growing and spreading, from St. Michael, Azores. One of the best figs in the North Hemisphere if planted in the ground. Good tree for growing in a pot. Fruit is large and of outstanding quality. Breba is huge. Very sweet even in cold weather.I have that cutting and it looks like it is going to die soon :(what varieties did you get from him?perhaps I should also plan a trip and go see him.If you go back can you take a camera with you and take pictures and perhaps do a short film with a digital camera.
Ottawan - is your DK grown in pot or in the ground? I have 2 in ground and one in pot from cutting started last year. DK in ground should give you a good crop by yr 4.
Capelas that name was mentioned I don't know if its the large treeit is planted in the groundhe didn't have anything for sale some guy from Thailand bought everything he had two days before I got there but he let me have a tree that I kept mentioning that I wanted to buy and he had two more of the same name I got out of him1-5 year old Exell1-3 year old Melanzana Merdoscola with a shoot at the root thats another fig I had the camera in the truck but I wasn't sure how he would take it if I started to snap shots of everything Next time I go I will take some pictures if he lets me these are the trees I got from Adriano

I have read that you have to e-mail Adriano a couple times for cuttings but I never seem to get a response and I wouldn't like to keep bugging him, but will if I have to. Is there a specific way to e-mail him or request something? I was looking to get Bêbera Prêta, Zuchini, Isfahan, does anyone know anywhere else to get these varieties in Canada or to Canada?
I ordered from Brugmansia, the plants were not bad, came bareroot, unfortunately they were deliveries in the postal stroke and nearly died sitting the mail for about 10 days without light etc but they are coming back. Not a bad value for the trees, maybe 18-20 inches tall. I'm thinking of ordering again.
i also ordered from Brugmansia and found the fellow to be very pleasant and easy to communicate with. he actually advise me to use a courier as the canada post strike was also ongoing at the time and got my plants 24 hrs later at an extra cost of 15$ from what it would of costed otherwise
Just a note on Grimo.I asked about the sources of his fig plants. Grimo originally obtained them locally from nieghbours (who may or may not have actually known what fig they had growing in thier yards). As such there may be confusion as to what is actually being sold. The BT which I purchased this spring, seems to be a Celeste. Now that is not a mislabelled fig on Grimos part since Celeste is not a fig that Grimo sells. Just a misnamed fig being propogated under the mistaken identity.
hbitaI have not bought BT from Grimo but the others that I had bought from Grimo such as Bifara, Natalina, Brunswick, Hardy Chicago and Lattarula were true to their names in my opinion and experience.
Unfortunate experience with Grimo. Bought 3 variants and only one true to what I wanted. HC was the only one correct. Both the White Fig & Ficazanna turn out to be like my Latarrula.
