Ripe Figs in January?!

Today I managed to get to a fig tree that I have beeneyeing for many years. Since I commute to work by train, I only see it as I pass this particular station. For years I have wanted to just get off and taste those beautiful figs. And, I did go there last year around September October...but there were no figs!! I still cut a couple of branches and tried to root thembut they got moldy & died.

Today, I went there knowing the tree is dormant so i could take cuttings! I also was very surprised that there were many figs on the ground that looked PRETTY GOOD! I picked one up and squished the sweet jam out. I took a good slurp. It had a sweet, strawberry taste! Wow, it was good! But ripe figs in January?! I have never had a ripe fig IN JANUARY! It had a good crunch too!

A man who was nearby approached me and said he took a sucker and is growing it at home now. He added "and these are very good figs!" He also informed me that the city prunes it and its no one's tree. No sooner did he end his sentence than I pulled my pruners from my bag to take cuttings. Darn, the city sure pruned it alright. I need a ladder! Well, I got a few cuttings anyway but I will definately come back to check for figs in the spring!

Wow fresh(or nearly fresh) figs in January and looks like a nice fig.  You sure know how to make us northerners jealous..lol
Good luck growing the cuttings!

Lol...hi, Pino. yes, surprisingly, the fig was pretty fresh. I mean it was maybe on the ground one week plus or maybe less. The figs had no bugs/ants or had been pecked ar all. There were a ton of leaves covering them but I was surprised at how they looked. And they were sift AND tasty! Very surprising to me!

Another strange thing was to see these nodes on the trunk of the tree. They were huge nodes!

wow! what a score! you got to taste a fig in January AND get some clippings!

What type of fig is that?

Great! Mine are still on the trees, eat 1 about each 3-4 days.

Was it planted or a seedling ? Did you test the seeds? Do they sink? I bet they do.

Meg,  it's sometimes really hard to make an accurate identification of the little critters after a couple of weeks of being on the ground, buried under leaves like that...

so, we usually don't try to guess what it used to be, but rather just group it all together under the title of 'road kill'.

              ...LOL!!!

Lol...Blue. Yes, well, I was sure NOT to eat the skin! One thing for sure, it had a very strong strawberry taste!!

Igor, I totally didn't think about it :-(! Its a huge tree that has been there for many years!! Okay, I will go back tomorrow for more figs (seeds) ... :-D. And your figs were soooooo good!!

that has to be a 30 to 40 year old tree. What a relief, not having to cover them in the winter!

Yes, PeteC...at least 30-40!
Igor, you still get rioe figs now?!!!!

Super cool find!  Please keep us informed. Good luck propagating this!

Yes, right, SuperMario1?! I may becable to go back this afternoon to get some of the spent fig seeds.

Meg. Can we make a trade for what we talked about for tbis one if you can still get it if not no worries
Richie

Hey, Richie!
Sure, we can.  The tree is huge!  Do you want cuttings when it's dormant or if you want cuttings now I can go there this weekend.
