Ripe Panevino Dark

This variety was collected from an abandoned former Italian restaurant owned by a Sicilian. The garden had two varieties brought over by the owner's father from Sicily years ago. After the restaurant was sold these figs were not cared for and later were cut to the ground. Me and a friend managed to take some cuttings, and here's a photo of the Dark Panevino. Most likely this is the breba crop.

The fig tasted very good.

bet it did. looks delish!

Not sure, Two years ago I took my last inventory of over 200 varieties.

Interesting looking fig Bass, looking at the picture seems it should be a main crop fig no?

Great looking Fig Bass,

Does this fig turn dark early on? (in other words is it dark when it is small?)

I have one that I received as a dark cutting but, it is still green with a red eye!

It is about the size of a quarter.

I should have also said, I have the PEV white also, and it has different looking leaves all together, its leafs are kinda long fingered as opposed to the PEV dark, it has 3 lobes and the leafs are smaller.

Just for a sanity check, was Panevino sourced from the same place as the Bissiri figs?  Or am I just thinking that this is the case because they were both scored at abandoned Italian or Sicilian restaurants?

Cecil it turns from green to dark.
Jason, no they're not the same, the Bissiri fig came from Calabria area in southern Italy, it has been grown in Philadelphia for almost 100 years.
nelson, This fig was rooted from a cutting taken in fall, specifically to be given back to the former Nino the son of the original man who brought it. Since he sold the restaurant without taking any of the cuttings. Anyways the fig formed later after it rooted and not sure if it was I would consider it a breba or main crop.

Thanks Bass

Thanks Bass, very interesting shape is the panevino dark ususally so flatened?

Thanks for the clarification Bass!

Bass:
Thanks for posting the photos. If you get the chance, it would be interesting to see what the leaf shape looks like. Can you post a few pics?
This fig looks very similar to my Aldo's Fig (aka Sal's Corleone).

Leon, I was thinking the exact same thing. That it looked a lot like Sal's Corleone.

Bass, do you have a Sal's Corleone to compare with your Panevino?

Bob

Guys,

I did not want to get involved here but I must throw my two cents worth in. I grew that tree from a cutting I removed from my older Pane e Vino Dark.

I know that definitely to be the case. It grew on the southern facing bow window all through the winter months. My best bet it is a Briba fig because it was an is the only fig on that SMALL tree not only that also because of the position of the fig on the branch.

Bass is going to take it to the person who once owned the original restaurant but now has on located in a different part of town. I grew it for him and promised I would get it to him one way or other. Bass lives in his area. Knows him as well.  I am sure he will be pleased when he receives the tree.

Very pleased to learn it had a good flavor considering the conditions it grew up with.

Lou

Leon, I think you are right, it looks erriely close to BC Sals C.

Here are both leaves from my Pane e Vino dark and my Aldo Sicilian.
I tried picking leaves that are just about the same size and in the center
section of both trees.

Nice pic's Bass & thanks to Lou for the leaf pic. Leaf is different. That's the fun in figging. Glad to know it's a gem tasting fig. I got to get one & will be patience. I have 3 Aldo + 1 Sal's Corleone. Honestly, I have been telling myself too many times "one more" and I end up with over a dozen more. I got to say thanks to the many fig friends in F4F. BTW, anyone tasted the Pane e Vino white ? I have the white one.

Thanks Lou for chiming in and for the leaves photos. I haven't tried any Sal's corleone figs yet.

The Pane e vino white is excellent tasting. I used to pick them from the main tree when the tree was alive.
Here's photos of the panevino white

Bass:Your figs are:
White Sicilian
 Red Sicilian,aka Sal Corleone,Aldo fig.
Aldo fig has three lobes mainly because it is stressed by FM Virus,While Sal Corleone grows 5 lobes leaves because is clean.
All three dark figs i mentioned are one and the same, and they all come from Sicily.
Black Sicilian JR,however, also has three lobes like Aldo, but it is perfectly healthy, and has much larger dark green leaves, and it is a different fig compared to all the above.

Bass, your Panevino White looks very much like Napolitana Blanca to me.

Wow!! another delicious fig. Thanks for the pic of Pane eVino white fig and the info that it is delicious. Wishing I had a dozen ripe fresh figs to eat right now. My Pane e Vino white is definitely getting some extra TLC starting tomorrow.

Well I guess I got double lucky....no make that triple lucky!

I have Sal's Corleone, Aldo's and Payne E Vino W. and dark.

In fact just yesterday I went out to the Aldo's and snipped about a dozen figlets off it hoping to divert the energy toward the tree instead of figs.

Right now my PEV white has only one breba fig on it, I will see how that one lonely fig does.

So, are Sicilian Red and Red Sicilian the same fig or different varieties?

Just to confirm to sicilian red os also sals corleone?

I have PEV, just don't know if they are the white or the dark. I don't remember, haven't fruited for me yet.

The question is,
Do we change the names now? Or do we keep them as such?

Good question Rafed!!!!!!!
