Hello,I was doing some research on root knot nematodes (RKN) a while back and recently did some research on ficus palmata (I am growing some f. palmata seedlings). I was interested in f. palmata's resistance to RKN and for possibly using them someday as a rootstock. I am not sure how cold hardy this species is (that is another issue). There have been many discussions about RKN but I thought that I would share some documents that may or may not have been previously posted regarding this pest. One interesting thing that I came across in the readings is that the southern species of RKN does not survive up north. There is a northern species of RKN but I could not determine if/how it affected figs. Likely there has not been much scientific study on northern RKN and fig growing. Apparently the southern RKN can get killed by the cold. This first document is very interesting to me and was the original reason for this posting. Nematode Parasites of Subtropical and Tropical Fruit Tree Crops by Fahiem El-Borai and Larry Duncan. http://www.staff.zu.edu.eg/fahiemkora/UserFiles/File/Plant%20Parasitic%20Chap.%2012(1).pdf See the third page or document page 469. This is one of the few scientific documents that lists varieties that are resistant to RKN. Ficus racemosa (aka f. glomerata), ficus cocculifolia, ficus gnaphalocarpa, ficus palmata, LSU Purple, Masui Dauphine, Zidi, Celeste and Poulette. Cocculifolia and gnaphalocarpa may be synonyms of ficus sycomorus - not sure yet. OMG. That's a lot of reading...and it isn't winter. Nonetheless, it's probably something that I had better read before I plant in the ground.C.J.
