Rockaway Green revisited

I am currently growing this fig. It is taughted to be an excellent green fig of Sicilian origin. Is anyone else growing RG and what has been your opinion of this fig? Please share photos if possible.

Hi Leon,

I absolutely love rockaway green. For me the brebas are late June and the main crop is late August. Definitely an Adriatic type fig, vigorous grower, and very productive. I have bataglia, Ventura, Adriatic JH, VS real, as well as paradiso bronze vs, palisades green, etc. I think rockaway may be my favorite of the Adriatic types ( along with palisades green).. The fruits are a little bigger than most Adriatic types. The brebas are also very good, too. Here are a few breba pics of my RG. I couldn't find any main ones on my camera, but I will be able to supply them very soon, I hope!

Bill, how do the ripening times compare for Rockaway Green and the green figs are comparing it to?  I have grown Battaglia Green, Paradiso-Gene, and Adriatic JH all in the ground.  We've had cold winters lately but I have yet to get much production out of BG and P-G because they are so late and don't come back quickly to set fruit after cold damage.  AJH has been better because it seems to set fruit more quickly and (perhaps) ripen it faster.

Steve,

I got rid of my paradiso gene after five years of never producing a fig I could eat. At least Kathleen black finally gave fruit after four years. Anyway, I should have mentioned that all of my trees are in pots now ( I'm moving, so I dug many of them up last year). Bataglia was mid September, paradiso bronze vs was early September. Ventura and Adriatic JH were both very late August ( and a few years in early September). Rockaway green and palisades green were on my birthday ( August 20) the last two years. Maybe that's why I like it so much...an annual birthday gift.

Bill, thanks for the info.  Have you tried Paradiso-Gene in a pot?  Last year I got a ripe fig in late October that, although it wasn't great, gave me a glimpse of what this fig could be when properly ripened during warm weather.  I've only grown it in the ground so far.  My thinking has been that Gene found it growing some Italian guy's yard in DC.  Apparently it was productive growing in ground or he wouldn't have taken cuttings.  But the winters lately have been a problem for this variety. The earlier ripening feature of Rockaway green is a very attractive feature.  Just when I thought I would stop acquiring more figs for a while!

Steve,

I have an extra air layer of RG you can have. I don't know if you ever make it out this way to Lancaster, but if you do, you can certainly have it and trial it in MD if you'd like.

Hi Bill: Thank you for the impressive photos and feedback on this fig. I had no idea that it produced two crops of figs. My tree suffered a set back with weather. And so no figs this season. Are you able to reveal the source of your Rockaway Green? I thought that this was a late fig but from what you report, the dates for ripening are quite early.

Hi Leon, my source was Art ( kubota1)-great guy, by the way. My tree is in a 15 gallon pot so I'm sure my ability to harvest brebas the last two years was a direct result of over wintering them. The main crop was also earlier because of this, but with all of my other Adriatic figs in pots, every Adriatic variety is on an even playing field.

Thank you Bill. Several years back I received mine from Ed (ejp3) who in turn received his from Angelo. Appreciate your feedback on this fig! Leon
