Rodney Dangerfield 'I don't get no respect' figs...

As I continue to build my collection, I've been reading lots of older threads to learn more about varieties and what people think of them. Some of the same very popular names keep cropping up and there seems to be a lot of people trying to get these particular figs - the holy grails of fig-dom.

But I know there must be a lot of really nice figs that are exceptionally good, but just haven't hit the 'big time' yet, or that are common and not hard to find and carry less prestige. Figs that are wonderful but rarely make anyone's top ten lists. Figs that don't generate 'the thrill of the hunt', or get one's juices flowing. Figs that just don't get no respect...

What figs in your experience are really, really good but perhaps are a bit taken for granted?

Black mission nl

Atreano
Genos black
Sals gene
Binello or any kadota type
Stella
Calvert

Atreano has been suggested to me also.

My newest additions are Hunt, Verte, Sal's and Excel.  I see Excell on your wish list and will trade with you at some point if you would like.

After lots of questions and answers my wish list includes LSU purple, LSU gold and Florentine.  I am told Florentine is good for drying.

Dennis

VdB/Negronne
Paradiso Gene

i'm sure there are others, but they are the only things i have eaten off my own trees.

edit: gina, i borrowed your signature line :) by the way, don't they have Santa Cruz Dark, Panachee, and Excel at UCD?

Mission is one I was thinking of. Just this past week a nice caretaker at a nearby original California Mission gave me a couple green cuttings from their community garden tree. It wasn't very old so I'm sure it was purchased in the last decade, so who knows what it really is. But I like the idea of a Mission fig from The Old Mission garden. :)

I do have a generic Atreano, Paradiso, and Kadotta rooting. Cuttings purchased from Jon.

I wouldn't mind trading for Excel, but at the moment I am not sure what I have to trade in return. Everything I have is only at rooting cutting stage or just beyond and before committing to anything, I'll need to take an inventory of what survives, what I want to keep, and what are extras. :)

Re my sig line- I borrowed the idea from Satellitehead/Jason. :)

Yes, I did know the figs on my list are listed at USD, but getting cuttings from there (if I got them all) would be almost a year away. As to the Panachee, it comes and goes from my list. It's supposed to taste really good, ...but I'm not sure about those gaudy stripes.  Che sera, sera.

drivewayfarmer  asked Jon that question once and here's what he said

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Tell-us-about-these-figs-Jons-top-ten-overlooked-varieties-5691799

Overlooked:

Negronne
Strawberry Verte
Beale
Narragansett
Saratoga
Paradiso
278-128
Ventura
Samoa Sunshine
Black Mission "NL"
Panache
...just for starters.

Bataglia Green is probably the best of the strawberry verte types.

Repeat of 1 in pos'st and easily obtained from some plant nursery's and a excellent fig here in my climate in full sun grown in a pot on rocks for added heat.
Violet de Bordeaux

Very true Martin

I've never tasted either, but Celeste and Hardy Chicago might qualify too.

A true good Brown Turkey fig may qualify too!?
