Rond De Bourdeaux (in-ground)

Here are a couple of pictures of one of my Rond De Bourdeaux fig trees (source #1) that is planted in the ground. This tree was completely top killed this past winter. It is now growing like a weed. The leaves are huge on this strain......

Oh Wow you weren't kidding Dan those leaves are huge, lovely looking plant by the way.

I had a couple of figs on this particular tree that did not have enough time to ripen last year. So still wating to taste this one. I will not be pinching to produce fruit this year. I want to produce wood this year. I'll be happy to wait another year to taste fruit if necessary.......

What did the fig look like?  The leaves (shape and size) look so similar to UCR 143-36 it's not funny.

This is what my RdB leaves look like, source is (indirectly) from Bass:

Jason, the leaves on my Rond De Bordeaux source #2 (still in container) look more like yours. I did not take pictures of the fruit last year from RDB #1. My RDB #2 is still a small tree and now growing in a container. I had the mother to that little tree growing in the ground and it died a couple of winters ago. I had taken cuttings from the mother before she died. I did get a chance to eat a couple of figs from that strain and they were excellent tasting for so young a tree.

...neither one of RdB's was sourced from Bass. I have a rather large 143-36 in ground fig tree growing in my yard.

Cool, so you have a 143-36 for reference.

That 143-36 has some pretty large leaves!  I'm on my 2nd year with mine (now 3gal).  It has really started putting out some large leaves - I've seen bigger, but the 143-36 leaves are twice the size of my hand in some cases.  They are also very thin and light, but this may be due to pot culture.

"Growth rate" (from closed bud to expanded leaf) is what affects leaf patterns the most on fig trees. The rate at which leaves form and actually grow can be a lot different between in-ground and pot culture. Any factor that affects actual grow rate can drastically affect how a leaf will look......size too. That is one reason why the same cultivar can look so different when grown in different areas. Sometimes to the point of looking like they are two completely different cultivars. Any thing that affects how fast leaves grow.....will impact how they actuallly look.
The faster a leaf grows.....the more definiton it will have.

Your RdB is looking great Dan. I look forward to seeing how well it fruits in your climate.

I did this one graft of RdB on 5-8-11. Grafting method used is cleft/wedge graft:

Looking pretty good so far. It's continuing to grow & I hope it hangs in there. I grafted onto a, locally sourced, in-ground tree. I plan to just protect it real well this winter & hope for the best.

This tree was really getting over-grown with weeds but I've since weeded it. So it looks much better now than it did in this pic ;) .

In what pic?  ;)

I do not see Bill's picture either.

IMO, there is no way to confuse an English Brown Turkey fig with regular Celeste or any other Brown Turkey fig (California Brown Turkey, Southeastern Brown Turkey, Southern Brown Turkey, or Vern's Brown Turkey). English Brown Turkey is a good tasting fig compared to CBT which is a lousy tasting fig. I might have a picture of an EBT somewhere. If I an find it, I will post it.

Here we go with the vanishing pic thing again :-/ . Tried the usual remedy - hopefully all can see it now. Seems that most never have an issue with this while it seems to be a constant with some of us - ??? At least it seems to be a simple fix.........

Found a couple of pictures of a breba fig from my in-ground RdB (source #2) fig tree. This particular tree was completely winter killed and I have a small backup tree of this particular strain still in a container. I am waiting for it to grow larger before it too goes in the ground.

Alan, I have Rouge, Ronde, and Violette De Bordeaux  fig trees in my collection. Yes, they are all different figs..........

Yes, VdB may be better for pot culture as it does not want to grow into a huge tree. I am especially curious how Rond DB performs for the forum members who are growing it in pot culure. Because it wants to be a one large tree........

You said it Dan.  I am growing it in a pot and it took a while, but it is putting black mission to shame as far as growth.

Boy Howdy ,
My RDB in a Bills Fig type subirrigated pot grows like crazy.

I've had a Ronde de Bordeaux in a pot a short while , growing like a weed. I'm going to put it in the ground later.
Great fig pics Dan.
BTW I'm not the neatest guy in the world Dan, but your neighbor across the street really needs to mow his lawn. ((

Yeah.....they use a special type of lawnmower to cut that grass across the street in the fall. Sugar cane is actually a type of grass.......

Here is my Ronde de Bourdeaux.  It is a 4 year old tree, 2 years in the ground.  I had no die back this past winter.  I did wrap my tree in burlap and placed plastic computer wire conduit on the base of the tree to protect it from mice.

I also have 2 fast growing UCR 143-36 AKA White Gem.  I grew this tree and the other from a cutting.  I have one twice this size in a much larger container out back.  I wasnt sure how the figs would taste so I did not plant them in the ground until I conduct a taste test.  I got my RdB from Bass years back and White Gem cuttings from VS years back too. I need to repot White Gem but it has several figs on and they are almost ready to pick.  So, I'm gonna wait a few day before repotting.

Lookin good Dan & Dennis

Cecil, at the rate that RdB tree is growing it may well  take over the whole yard. Personally, I don't think it would be good for pot culture. But who knows, figs aren't supposed to grow in Canada either........

Dennis, I have 146-36 growing in the ground. The fruit were good tasting when I had it in a container. I have been very disappointed in it since it went in the ground. Right now, my thinking is to remove it this fall if its performance does not improve.

I first showed my Ronde with pictures in 2009 growing season .
I have several of them.

It does fine like my others in pot culture .

I read long ago some plants not good for container culture.

This simply is not true if grower properly cares for them from my own experiences.
