Ronde de Bordeaux, Celeste and Bryant Dark

RdB - first fig off of a 2 year old tree.  Worst fig ever.  Has to be a youth thing.  There's another that will probably ripen for me in a few days.  hopefully that'll be better  :)  Not sweet at all with a hint of old hay.

Celeste - sweet, slightly figgy, great for a second year plant

Bryant Dark - 6 -10 month old cutting.  The best of the bunch.  Rich flavor.  Mild raspberry with a hint of grape in the skin.

Bob, I have a 2nd year RdB also (grown in container) and I have to agree.  I have tasted about 10 figs and haven't been overly impressed so far though a couple were pretty good.  I think this is one I will trial in the ground though and see if it improves.  That's good news about the Bryant Dark.

Those are some great looking figs and thanks for sharing the flavors too.

goss

I have all 3 of these varieties, however, they are all st year trees/cuttings and haven't produced yet.  I'm really looking forward to the Bryant Dark next year.

Nice figs and good photos, too. Thanks.

bob, give it a chance. i'm sure it will improve with age. my White Greek that tasted like.. air, gave good taste this yr even when it wasn't ripen properly. i'm letting rest hang on the tree for awhile. the figs are also ripening more evenly it seems.

Bob,
Thanks for the pictures and commentary.
I'm still waiting on ripe main crop on my potted Bryantdark and Celeste. Hopefully we will be getting some warmer and dryer weather soon.

In defense of the Ronde, I initially thought it was going to fall off unripe.  It was tiny, turned dark purple and hard.  Then it changed its mind, swelled a little and got soft.  The second one on the tree swelled first, then turned dark purple.  It's not soft yet.  The second one is still pretty small and didn't spend as much time swelling as the fig from last year.  Last year's fig looked like it was going to be perfect but it got knocked off in the move.

Bob I had to do a double take when I read "Worst fig ever". Sorry but it made me smile not that it wasn't tasty but I just was NOT expecting that in a RdB post.

My rdb is also shy of 2 years old and I have a few figs on it already. If/when they ripen up I'll also be a member of the "yuck my fig is young" club too. But the next few years ought to to change that hopefully.

Hopefully yours will be great.

Thanks for sharing the pics Bob , I have  Bryant Dark and am thrilled to see the fig and hear abut the taste .
