This year my brown turkey shows big figs but they  have big ostioles and the ants go in..
it sits in a pot which has a saucer and somtimes it over fills it (stays like that for a day)..
is it the reservoir which lets it wick too much water?

how does SIPS fare in that issue- i guess it works by the same principles?
also the ripening is different now it ripens slowly but last year in clay pot and no saucer it was ripnening suddenly in a mater of 1-2 days-does anybody else notice a difference regarding clay pots and fig tree?

some figs just have a big eye. can't really be helped. some will open the eye bigger when they are in wet/humid condition. best to stay away from figs that have very large eye. Paradiso Gene has reasonable size eye. as long as the weather cooperates, it produces great figs even with sitting on saucer and being watered daily. however, if it rains all day long for couple of days, it will soak up all the waters and will open its eye really big spoiling and letting ants and other insects in. if the taste of the fig is right for you.. you will just have to find the right balance. otherwise, figs with big eyes should be left to burn in a 50 gallon drum.

Nice looking fig tree Eli. Do you grow olives over there too? The SWC suspend the growing media above the reservoir with an air gap and has holes to provide drainage back into the reservoir. In your setup the water does not flow back into the bottom tray, rather it stays wet. I'd tip the plant 45 degrees for 5 minutes and drain off the excess so those roots at the bottom can breathe but that is what works in my zone. You're in zone 10 so the tree may need every drop it can get.

I dont have olive trees-maybe next season ill start.. this season im all in with the figs.
btw regarding my zone this year it was raining alot "unusually" after the fruit buds developed which probably also helped..
as i saw in other posts in the us also slow starting hot season there-probably a worldwide issue-these weather changes...
global warming? weather changes? i am happy we are past the 2012 mayan predictions :) 

I  knew what i was doing when i put the saucer (regarding the risks)  but i didnt think brown turkey opens the ostiole when its feet are wet..
i guess i was wrong..

what can be used to close of the ostioles?  some home remedies?  maybe candle wax?   any ideas?
