Root knot nematodes in NJ?

I was just talking to a member here I was trading with and he had RKN in NJ. I couldn't believe it. And he cured some plants by planting garlic around them.Thought they were way down south. My collection is mostly pot culture with Premier Pro mix potting mix so I should be OK. Anybody else in NJ ever have them?
Jason

Plant some carrots to see if you have them. It is last chance for carrots this year anyway. There are several ways carrots can become deformed but they are very much affected by RKN and will have the nodules if they are present. They like sandy soil, most of NJ is sandy so they could be there for sure.

Check the roots of tomato and/or okra plants that you grow in your yard too. Nematodes love those two vegetables and they can come into your yard from purchased infected plants. If you grow either of those "summer" vegetables....check the roots in the fall for signs of nematodes. A nematode free plant that you started from seeds will usually get infected if nematodes are already present in your soil. This is especially the case with okra.

Thanks guys. I don't have them in my yard. I was suprised that I had to inspect plants from this area for them. I always looked for the beading from plants down south and out west.

Hi Jason, I'm glad you mentioned the RKN situation that I had, and want to
share with others on the forum.
(1) My potted figs would wilt even by having wet soil in summer and figs would drop.
(2) My inground trees next to my house would do the same.
(3) This all due to RKN.
(4) Plus the main tree would split skin (bark) and die.
Last year a had some extra garlic so I planted them in these same pots
and next to the house. Upon checking with you I discovered that I might have about 99% success rate, and just to make sure I will once again repeat the same procedure this fall, plus adding limestone that Herman mentioned in
previous post. To date my trees inground and in pot are doing quite well,
thanks, Sergio.

@ Sergio- The plants look great. I repotted them and there are no signs of RKNs. I cleaned up the outer roots and they are very healthy. I found some garlic in some of them. Pleasure to meet and trade with you.

Happy to hear that Jason, I am going to leave the garlic in the pots and ground, and start over again, thanks for the potting mix, I am trying to repot the cuttings that are half dead due to the wrong potting mix, take care, Sergio in NJ.
