I'm looking into grafting some trees next spring/summer, and am considering what varieties have healthy root systems, are disease resistant or grow well despite FMV, and are cold hardy. Please feel free to offer you input. Thanks!
Right off by looking at your signature I would say Olympian and HC. Both mine have very vigorous roots and we know they are cold hardy.
Great, that makes things easy.
zidi is said to be nematode resistant
RdB hardy and fast growing root system
Will a brown turkey work good in the south. ??
Thanks guys. Looks like a have some varieties that will serve as great root stock. Figpig_66- Yes BT grows well over here.
Thanks mario. We have to start them in February or March correct?
Figpi_66- There is no direct answer. There are many different approaches to grafting, and this "frankenfig" post has a lot of helpful information on the topic: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/my-frankenfig-6346903?pid=1289350043 There are other situations where grafting later in the spring/early summer might be more appropriate. . . like this
I attempted to use Florea last year (with the hope that the cold hardiness might transfer to the scions) but the grafts didn't take, unfortunately. I've also read on the forum (I think) that Alma is an fmv free variety and is somehow resistant to fmv. If this could be confirmed then it could be a good choice. Finally, LSU Purple is supposed to have an exceptionally extensive root system so it could be a good candidate too.
Thanks for that information. I love this forum.
My 3rd year Black Mission grew 8 feet so far this season with some broken branches from the heavy weight. I'm actually gonna pull it because it grew TOO FAST!They definitely have FMV but it doesn't seem to matter!
This summer, I grafted a heavily infected fmv Tashkent Yellow to healthy fmv free BT rootstock.Several other fig varieties grafted to tissue culture rootstock.I started airlayers on the grafted branches later. One airlayer of Montenegro Dark grafted to TC Black Mission rooted, but it will be 2016 before I expect any growth.
