Rooted Col de Dame Noir

I've been itching to add one of these to my collection for a year now and finally got one to root.

Started this 4 weeks ago with barely damp potting mix and had not watered it at all but you can see the residual moisture was retained. This was rooted in a 1 gallon pot along with 6 other cuttings nice and snug. It was covered with a 1 gallon ziploc bag that was aired out every 3rd or 4th day for 5 minutes.

Check out the lone wacky root too. I'll pot this up into a 1 gallon pot soon.

Vince,

Looking good.
If I can give you one advice is to wait a bit longer to pot it up. Those roots are still weak and tender and risk of falling off at the slightest move. Let it build more stronger roots.
I rather wait till it is almost root bound. Just for the simple reason of it being a difficult cultivar to obtain and difficult to root.

Good luck with it.

I agree with Rafed.  Let it get good and strong before attempting to pot up.

THAT LOOKS GOOD !

AUSTIN

Rafed and Frank, thank you.  So tempting to mess with but I will resist and let it continue to root until it looks like a bowl of spaghetti.

What is the little bag you have and how you support it?
do you lay it down or upright?
Please, show us the picture of the bag in rooting chamber, would you?
what mix did you use?

- I like the fish scale root, that looks very good! Thanks for sharing!

Vince,

I know all too well how tempting it may get sometimes. But you need to be strong.
We're counting on you.

Grasa,

I think Jon was selling some of these bags just a little while ago.

I'll have to toughen up Rafed. I got some other figs to root and pot up to keep me busy and not meddling too much. Making some real SWC with 2 gallon reservoirs also this winter.

Grasa here is a pic of the rooting setup I am using currently. I just pop them into a 1 gallon pot and I find they root better if the pot is full vs just a few cutting. I think the pot full of cutting is better insulated and prevents humidity and temperature fluctuations in my environment better. My sone and I made the bags out clear report covers we had and a vacuum sealer. They are very similar to the bags that Jon showed us and I modeled them after those as his results are impressive. I find I can control the humidity and air flow in the 1 gallon pots better when they are packed full than using a larger tupperware container. This is almost straight potting mix, maybe 10% perlite at most but not much. The potting soil was in my garage and was bone dry so I misted it with water until it almost barley clumped when squeezed in my palm.

Fish scale root - Great name! I hadn't thought of that name but yup that's exactly what it is! I hope it grows friends.
