Rooting cuttings in Pearlite

I'm going to try the pearlite method of rooting as soon as I get some cuttings from local fig trees in my area. I plan to put them in my un- heated garage on top of a frige and freezer I have out there. Do you think it will be enough heat, and do I need to put a light source on them from above. My garage door has 8 little windows in it and lets in quite abit of light but was just wondering if sprouted cutting would be OK in this way or do they need a more secure location as garage door is raised a couple times a day, wife still working  and raises door twice a day morning and evening, so  temperature changes a little with that. I have an un-heated shop that is insulated and I can add a gas heater for warming purposes if needed or electric heater, size 30x32. Anything to keep shop above freezing. Does not het below freezing in there unless it gets really cold outside. But Do I need a light above cutting ore not. I have one window in this shop so it is fairly dark in there during the day. I'st time rooting for me and I want to get it right as I can. Using 100%pearlite in clear 2 litre pop bottles through the winter on about a dozen cuttings that will be taken sometime around Thanksgiving I would say as we've had no frost yet. Fig trees are still all green here in west Tn. All info appreciated  Thanks Sigman

Were do you live ? Do you have,a hot water heater closet? They work good. If you do place, cuttings on top and cover with multiple towels. Lots of free heat
2nd. Put all yoyr cutting in a big plastic storage ben with lid put a set of Christmas lights inside. Insulate with big blankets on top and bottom. Or come up with your own heating method. They sell heat mats but homemade heating pretty cheap. What ever you do. Do not set on garge floor. Try to put a plastic storage been in your house with heat ,source but hide it from the wife. They dont understand the fig thing always lol. Good luck and be creative richie from louisiana were irs warm. Lol

Hi Sigman.

Cuttings should be 70-80 degrees for rooting. I put my cups inside a clear plastic tote and sit it an inch over the floor register with a towel around the bottom to trap the heat. It keeps it humid and warm both things you need for the cutting to root. I open the tote lid daily to let fresh air in.

Light is only needed once it starts pushing new growth out.

If you use perlite..make sure you sift it first with a colander to get all the dust and fine particles out. Just be careful not to breath the dust.
