Hi all. I wondered how you rooted extra thick cuttings with success ? I'm talking about cuttings with a diameter of 3/4- 1" or better .  Thanks...

I rooted a Brogiotto Nero that was over one inch thick, it had two nodes on it, and I buried the whole cutting and it rooted just fine.

How did you make out with the cuttings I sent?

I have one that is about 1.5" thick that I received from an auction on ebay in January. I didn't know what to do with it so I just treated it like the others and put it in moss. Actually it was the first one to root!! It is now in a 1gal.

Hi Jenn , that is how I normally root - in sphagnum. None were ever over 1/2" thick though . I'm happy to hear you've had success with thicker cuttings that way. Thanks.

Hey Pat, I've rooted large diameter cuttings in sphagnum also or I've started them directly in a cup or clear juice container with 70% perlite and 30% soil.

Thanks Art for your input also. I don't want to lose this cutting , I've only one. I did put it in sphagnum a few days ago, but thought I'd ask everyone for their tried and true approach. 

I think I've had better luck with the larger cuttings than the smaller ones. I, too, root in sphagnum. Good luck!

I've pre-rooted cuttings up to 2" caliper successfully in Long Fibered Sphagnum Moss. It helps if the top of the cutting is sealed to prevent dessication and microbial inoculation (mold and rot).

Jeff, thanks . I've had  a pretty good record with small/med sized cuttings thus far , in sphagnum. The long fibered moss is what I use also. This one cutting is the largest so far.

 

Hey Pete! Thanks for suggesting  to seal the top . Seal it while it is in the sphagnum or after it has rooted and ready to be potting in 1 gal ?

I usually seal the top ends of the cuttings before they are placed in the moss. I also seal them after they are freshly cut to reduce the chance of introducing bad microbes.

I have much better luck with large cuttings. They have more stored energy than the smaller ones. I like cuttings around one inch. Dr. Charlie Johnson of LSU recommended this size and after trying it I was really surprised at the vigor they have. From cutting to one gallon pot in less than three months. I potted fifteen and only lost one.
