Rooting gel

no but it looks interesting

You read my mind Scott.  I was wondering the same thing.  That stuff is expensive but if it works flawlessly, it would be worth it if you had that rare cutting that you don't want to lose.  Can't say how many times I've been in that situation and nearly always end up losing it.  Murphy's Law.  hehe

I didn't know that existed, Scott.  Very interesting.

Dave,

That was so neat!

It's $14 for a 6 pack at Wal-Mart online.

I'm going to order 2 or 3 of them, turn up the juice and see what shakes loose.

Dave,

That's a great video!!!

Now I really want to get some and make my own video with a fig cutting.

Great information. I just searched "Gel2Root" and found it available in several places, and you can also buy it in bulk "1Liter" and put it into your own containers. I read the video we watched took 4 to 6 weeks, to make.

The same company that makes the Gel2Roots also makes Gel4Plugs for use with planting plugs. still looking to see where I can get it.

WOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!! COOOOLL!!!

Scott after a little more investigating I see it comes in a handy one liter container

Good find. I may have to get some and try it on sum cutting from a tree in yard to see how figs like it. Thanks

I didn't have any luck with Clonex gel rooting hormone last season.  Everything I used it on rotted around the end where I applied the gel.
I wonder if the gel prevented the cutting from breathing?

This year I want to try rooting hormone powder instead.

The plus look interesting as well.  I'll have to read up on them. Got a little busy.

I saw the liter also, but only in Euros.

Did you find it in the US Dave?

That's interesting, I've used rooting hormone powder on other cuttings, but not figs.  I have not had that issue.

But this product is more like what is used to produce TC plants. I think it's worth a try, nothing ventured nothing gained right.

lowest price I found so for $8.36

Arthur,

That is an interesting site, they seem to carry everything and then some.

Scott

Well,

I just ordered 2 six packs.  They claim up to 18 cuttings per 6 pack, might be a bit tight for figs, I will most likely stay with one per.  Or I might experiment with one square, will need to separate the cuttings fast, don't want the roots to become a tangled mess.

They will arrive early next year, I'll post when they arrive and keep an update going.

Do not use rooting powder, that is a no-no. They can rot. Try Dip n grow or nothing at all. Cuttings will root it just may take longer.

Rafael

I don't use rooting hormone on figs since most figs root readily.  Although it may help those hard to root fig varieties.

Last year I used a GEL on mulberry, persimmon, kiwi and some other fruits and they all rotted at the bottom.
I used the same soil mix and method as on my figs.
It may have been my fault since I was a little heavy with the water last year and lost some of my fig cuttings as well mostly when up-potting.

I wonder whether GEL by adhering to the cutting prevents air from getting to it and thus encourages rot?

Dip n grow is not a gel, so maybe it will react differently. Try it.

OK will try.
Thanks Rafael.

I seem to recall a discussion last year when we were talking about plugs where someone mentioned using this stuff.  I don't know if they ever gave an update on whether it worked.  I'm just wondering, in addition to breathability, if the rest of the cutting will dry out that isn't in the gel; assuming only an inch or two will be submerged?
