rooting in a box

My preferred method - Desert King, 5 weeks, no water, no mold, shaded corner of garage 40-60 degrees.  Shoebox or salad greens box, chopped sphag, light cover of horse bedding.

Danny,

You got those cuttings to root at those temps? That's awesome!

And here I am worried it was a bit cool where I placed my cuttings. Sure is reassuring.

Thanks

Great work!  The guy in Oregon with the desert king orchard roots them this way.

That's some mighty fine looking roots Danny. I gotta get me a horse so I can have some of that stable bedding handy. Stuff really works wonders.  LOL.....   :)     Good luck with all your fig projects in 2013,
and Happy Holidays to you and the family.

Good Job Danny!

Desert King is one of the few who's roots go into the air!  Why they do that is weird, but they do!  Roots and leaves are the most rewarding part of this little hobby we have!  I think those should get potted up pretty soon!

I was thrilled to find roots today on one Jurupa and one Vicenzo from Jpeaspanen!  They don't look like yours, but they have rooted, and when you only get ONE cutting, and it survives, you celebrate!!

Thats nice and thanks for sharing what you did.

That is amazing Danny, no water! Oh, my hard drive crashed on this new computor and I lost all my e-mail  address. This is why I did not reply to yours.

Jstall, I've had 2, yes two!  Hard drive crashes.  Finally, I pay for an auto hard drive copy every day from Norton Anti-Virus back-up.  I feel comfy because the first thing on my computer daily is "Norton is backing up your hard drive."  It's a subscription thing, you know, but you don't ever have to talk to INDIA!  You have no clue the amount of bottles of wine I have consumed in frustration talking to "India."  Subscription is much cheaper!

Got rid of my Microsoft computer 2 yrs a go. So glad i did! No more cookies, viruses or crashes. Thanks to my IPAD, Linux and tabletPC! Companies selling antivirus software will charge you mega bucks to remove a virus if you get one virus. What a ripoff! Zone alarm software was the only thing that keep viruses from my computers back in the day.

Probably should have made it clear-- the moss was damp when I started, no water added.  This is the first trial of a liquid that was given to me in the summer.  I hope to have more results soon.  It is not a root hormone, at least not a commercial one, I really don't know what it is.

Danny, we did diverge off topic on the computer thing.  But on topic.  I think everything will work out OK! Seems like you are doing the right things.  Less moisture is More fg.  thats all I know.

Danny, does this mean you used a liquid rooting hormone to dampen the moss?

Sorry for the confusion - I have liquid that was given to me by a chemist to try on fresh and stored cuttings.  It is not a root hormone but a product that is being re-purposed.  I always use damp, almost dry chopped sphag moss in all my rootings.  I do not add any water after closing the top, leaving the condensation to do the watering.  All cuttings are soaked in the mystery liquid prior to putting in the moss.  I have not done parallel rooting to really test yet.  I have a set of Desert King cuttings that will be started next week using no mystery liquid, not very scientific but we'll see.  I will actually do more actual testing starting in March.

I just love a mystery!!

Another Dan with another mystery.......HAHA....Imagine THAT.

This isn't my mystery.

I really don't know what this stuff is.  I know that the box of DK cuttings struck faster than I could have imagined and we will see with the next go around.  I think it is a "soap" but it does not foam or lather like a soap but it washes the dirt from your hands, very clean.  I asked about the toxicity and am told it is 100% organic and can be ingested without any effects.  I am not going to drink it!!!

I will keep the group advised.
